It is a touching and inspiring tale of a young girl who goes against the traditions of her grandfather in order to become leader of her tribe. This movie is wonderful because the actors are very genuine and you really feel like you are standing in the room watching them interact. It also gives you a glimpse into the deeply rooted traditions of the Mauri tribe. I highly recommend this movie.

This is a classic movie. It tells the story of a young girl from a different culture who wants to do things the " men " do in her culture but is reminded by her grandfather that she cannot do those things. She fights hard to gain her independence and by the end of the movie you really feel that she deserves her status with the men.

This movie shows a very powerful young girl who is disconnected from some of her family but develops extremely caring and heartfelt feelings. An interesting, thoughtful, and informative movie.

I don't think people realize what a gem this movie is. It is a foreign film from new zealand I saw one year- and i've been looking for a decent priced one for my own collection. if anyone ever has a chance to see it- you should!

I watched this movie last evening. I heard it was a good movie and I was not at all disappointed. In fact it was a great movie. I'm happy that I now have a copy of it.

i like that movie because it's one of the famous movies, also the price was right and when i recieved it was in a good condition, and all what im looking for is the quality, the price and the seller should be okay. i dicided to buy it because i have a good experience with ebay. in the past few months i bought camera. 2 camera cases, adaptor,all of them separate and i didnt have any problem with shiping.

When I first heard about this movie, I thought it would be filled with magical wonder and adventure. Instead I got a delightful work of art that taught me about the Maori culture and lifestyle. Main character Keisha Castle-Hughes played an amazing role and lit up the screen every time. This film is great for all ages, but young kids probably won't understand or even be interested. Grab a blanket and a tissue box and enjoy!

DVD came in a very quick timing and packaged very well. Have enjoyed the movie already several times.

I love everything about this movie. I have to admit I had to pay attention a bit but it is such a great story for kids and adults. LOVE IT!

Amazing story, filled with the folklore of the People, and centering on their livelihood, dependent on the whaling industry.
An excellent family film, for children 10 and older, as it may be a bit too intense for younger children.

Not your usual Hollywood movie, but one I found to be "more" than I ever expected. The accent of this culture was pure joy. Keisha Castle-Hughes gives a award winning performance. After watching it several times, I still diliked her Grandfather. His performance is so believable,even at the end I could not like him. I was happy to see Vicky Haughton (from Dances With Wolves) and love Cliff Curtis, a really fine actor. Keisha's performance is beyond great. I loved every character in the movie (especailly her Uncle). After discussing it with my Sister (a true movie buff like myself)we agreed not everyone would like this movie. But I for one will keep this story and it's characters in my heart for always. And to Niki Caro, I say thank you for this wonderful movie.

A great human interest story......I bought it for my daughter who is in a nursing home at age 52. She had seen this movie a long time ago and really enjoyed it....I bought it for her to add to her collection of great movies.....

A poignant, touching story of a child finding her place in the Maori culture. Her journey is made even more difficult because what she sought traditionally was done by a male-not a female. Her struggles with societial and family norms, and her own spirits eventually culminates into a memorable, inspiring conclusion.

I fortunately rented this from my local library so it didn't cost anything but I was disappointed in the movie. I thought their would be much more ocean/water scenes then what was in the movie. It was very slow and I wish all the songs the kids & elders sang were subtitled so I could understand what they were chanting. I would never ever watch this movie again. I will give the movie this though the scene where she is actually riding the whale and she goes under and looks up through the water to the sky that was neat .... it gave the whales perspective. I can't help but think if a cutie pie girl like abigail breslin was in this movie it would have been so much better

A good movie that combines culture, history of the Maori. A great movie for the cultural youth. Excellent movie for the culturally aware.

I love this book because it goes a long with the movie. It's about a girl who becomes the chief of a community. Simply Amazing.

This movie was one of the most touching and heart rending movies I have ever watched. I cried through the whole thing sometimes out of sadness and sometimes out of joy. The writing, acting and camera work were all excellent. This is a must see for the whole family!

I (being a animal lover) had rented this movie at the public library and both my husband and myself loved it so much that I decided I wanted a copy for my own library. It is a great movie with a lot of meaning behind it. I would recommend it to one and all. We rate it as tops in so many ways, watch it and you'll see for yourself.

Beautiful movie about a girl trying to take her birthrate despite being a girl. Pai's twin brother passes away at birth, and he was chosen to be the next chief. She goes against her father's old ways to prove that she is the chosen one.

We loved this movie so much we named our daughter Paikea. It is the best! I highly recommend it to everyone.
