This hard drive sounds like the cure all for anyone who has a lot of stuff on their computer, but needs to be mobile. The only problem is that you have to install a suite of software just to get the drive to run properly, and oh yah, it doesn't work with Vista 64-bit or any version of Windows Server. It also doesn't work with Macintosh or Linux for that matter. I would recommend you not buy this hard drive unless you are positive that you are running a 32-bit operating system, and you don't ever plan on upgrading. This hard drive, despite its drive size, keeps the user in the stone age due to compatibility and portability.

  STAY AWAY
Review created: 03/07/09

I bought this piece if garbage because of lies printed by Western Digital and some ignorant lying review writers.
I bought it because it was supposed to be MAC compatible (OS/X), very quiet (even silent!) and it was supposed to work at 10/100/1000 Mbs network speeds. Suffice it to say, this worthless piece of junk is not MAC compatible and you probably need a PhD in computer science to get it to be seen by the MAC, I personally failed, it is VERY noisy after it runs for a few minutes and the "quiet" fans kick-in and is ridiculously SLOOOOOOOOOW, it runs at 100 Mbs max, a 1GB file will take several HOURS to copy, yes HOURS!!! And yes my network runs at 1000 Mbs and I do get a sustained 35-40 MB/s rate but only 3-3.5 MB/s with the WD!
PLEASE, do not consider this item for any reason, STAY AWAY!!
Western Digital is the only manufacturer who's Hard Drives ever failed on me; 2 out of 2 in 20 years of computing and working with almost all makes of HDs, nothing failed but the two WD models!! I should have known better than buying anything with the lame name of WD on it!

This product was easy to set up. Basically one of those deals where you just click OK again and again. Nothing hard about it. Read the directions first at the Western Digital website. The website is good. The product works. I am happy with it.

  Not so Great Network Drive
Review created: 11/26/08

I got this drive so I don't have to keep a server running to share music/videos.
When I got the drive, I plugged it into my Dell 24 port switch.
None of my machines could see the drive. Tried resetting the drive according to instructions.
I finally plugged the drive into my dsl router (with DNS). The drive did get an ip address and showed up on my network.
Copied all my music and videos.
Everything appeared to be fine.
A couple of days later, I went to play some music and the drive was not on the network.
I had to unplug it and plug it in again to restart it before I could access it again.
Seems like it goes to sleep, or more like a coma after a while.

WesternDigital My Book World Ed. 1TB External HardDrive
Review created: 11/16/08

Western Digital has some bu!! $hi+ software(MioNet) installed in the OS of this device. It uses some media copy right athentication to determine whether you should be able to store certain file types on this drive (.avi, .divx, .mp3 ect...). Of couse I didn't look into this BEFORE I bought one of these. Luckily I got mine at such a good price ($60US) that I still made out, by removing the (2) 500GB drives & slapping them into my tower.
There is a way to hack these boxes, but it requires knowledge of Linux, which unfortunately I don't have. SO BE WARNED!!! if you are going to buy one of these and you want to use it for media files, either know Linux(and know you are taking on a project) or look at another manufacturer, which is what I would recommend, just based on principal.

  What they dont tell you
Review created: 12/06/09

I bought one of these for my network backups. Now usually I have no issues with network drives however I must tell you about this nightmare. What they don't tell you is in order to access this drive from other computers outside of your network, is you will have to buy a Mionet software license every year. It's to expensive and crashes way to much as it runs in Java. This hard drive is easy to setup but remember this part....If you are going to want to delete anything off this HD ever they stay away. This is a huge issue with this HD. You can delete items but its either all or nothing. You're best bet is to hook another computer up to your network to delete files from there on the WD HD, and expect a nightmare of times to pass. I have been deleting items off this hard drive for the past 3 weeks " I am not joking" The computer has been on and deleting files everyday. Now it gets worse, the Mionet software is so buggy it will constantly crash on computers and is hard to strip off any computers its on. The good part of this drive is you can copy files to it quick due to the 10/100/1000 Ethernet. That is about the only good part of this drive other than the cool look. It runs hot and seems to always be heard which is surprising from being no fan. I would highly recommend another NAS stay away from this bug infested WD NAS.

Western Digital My Book™ World Edition™ 1 TB Hard Drive
Review created: 06/02/09

The Western Digital My Book™ World Edition™ 1 TB Hard Drive is a NAS "Network Attached Storage" storage device. This devise is perfect for the home or small office with more than one computer where there is a requirement to store data (Music, pictures, videos) where more than one person needs access.

It is also a great media for back up of computers to a central location.

Another great trait of this device is the ease of access while away from the location of the devise.

I travel for business and I have been able to get to data that was on on this device via a web interface while on the road.

The only problem that I have had is that the supplied software is not compatible with my work supplied VPN software. There is a work around but the cost is that not all the advertised features work with a VPN in place.

  Kind of Quirky
Review created: 02/03/09(updated 02/03/09)

This NAS is kind of quirky, but solid.
• Its fan can get quite noisy when it kicks in.
• I get a 10 second or so pause from when I double click on the drive’s icon in My Computer to the time it shows its contents. (The case on all computers who have accessed it.)
• Seems kind of slow when it comes to writing and reading files. However, I have not had a problem streaming media from it. (No pauses or jitteriness.)
• Think of it more as a “vault” than a drive, if you don’t, you’ll be disappointed in its speed.
• Can be “plug and play” or/and it also allows for some pretty granular administration if you’d like (shares and permissions).
• There are two ways to use the Western Digital My Book™ World Edition™ 1 TB Hard Drive. The first is to use WD Anywhere Access, a custom version of MioNet. It sounds good for the average user who just wants it to work, the trade off is you are limited to what WD Anywhere Access will allow you to do. The second option is to administer it from its built-in web interface. I’m an IT professional and so I chose to go this route, and haven’t regretted it. The key is to start on page 28 of the manual instead of following the instructions on how to install WD Anywhere Access. After that, just map the share(s).

Great product. Though the retailer provides you the information on how to download the software to utilize the unit, you still have to a bit of research to figure out how to make it work.
