WD is my favourite! I had one own and I used it until 2 years impeccably. I tried it already with FireWire and very fast! I ordered it here promptly because of this! Thank you very much!

I initiated a pay pal claim!!! and out of town for holidays and could not return for partial I said Partial refund through pay pal buyer protection!!!!!! WDC did not sell me the DOA hard drive Grassrootscomputers did!!!!!! worst experience on EBAY!!!!

Works great with my Mac by using Time Machine. Fast, easy to use and set up. I would buy it again. Also, it shuts off with the computer to save spindle life... very cool feature.

I was wanting a large external drive for all my pictures. I bought a new 320 gig USB My Book that I loved, but ended up giving it to my son when the previous external I 'made' him turned out to be faulty. I really liked the idea of the extra speed from a FireWire connection & having paid extra for additional FireWire connections on my new computer, felt this was the way to go. Unfortunately, New, Large capacity, FireWire externals are pretty much out of my price range. Thus I purchased a refurbished one.

My only complaint was the lack of a hard copy of the instructions to look at before connecting to my computer. The instructions that come on the hard drive say to connect it first by way of the USB, read the instructions, then download the proper needed drivers for the FireWire in order to be able to use the WD button manager, etc. I connected via FireWire right out of the box, then had to do a lot of research on line and undo several things before I got it to work the way it is supposed to.

Once I had it connected and everything working according to specs, I reformatted the hard drive to NTFS, then partitioned it into 4 x 250 gig drives. My massive amount of pictures only take up about 4% of the entire drive at this time -- I am THRILLED with it.

NOTE: I've been told to, and have taken the precaution of burning all my photos to DVD's as a backup so they are stored elsewhere in the event of any kind of crash.

Do not trust it with your data. Support wouldn't help me either. Absolutely a mistake purchase. I'm afraid to use it because it could do it again.

Thing was corrupted. Needed to be re-partitioned and re-formatted. No software or documentation and neither the seller or WD provided any worthwhile support.

The Western Digital My Book™ WDG1C5000N 500 GB FireWire 400 (1394a) Hard Drive is fast and relatively inexpensive for those looking for a sturdy external HD on a budget. The firewire input maintains great speeds even when your computer is running demanding resource-hungry programs. It's great for backing up your main hard drive with time machine (I'm currently running Mac OS X Leopard) or storing other media: videos, music, pictures, etc. It operates quietly and stays cools. The only issue (which is trivial after all its benefits are taken into consideration) is that there is maybe a half second delay when accessing the drive as it wakes from its sleep mode. Overall this is a fast and reliable external drive well worth the price (consider buying manufacture re-certified)!

I had previously bought a passport and when finding myself needing a hard drive for all my media I did not hesitate to purchase a WD product again. Easy setup, software for both mac and windows, easy backup and sync. No complaints, economical, fast, and reliable.

A couple of years ago I purchased a 400GB segate external hard drive to store my music videos, music, and back-up my files on my laptop. Well, I have now used up all of that storage was in search for another external hard drive with a bigger capacity. When I bought my first external hard drive I wanted to avoid the Western Digital brand but after borrowing one from a friend I was sold. I'm excited that I can connect both of my hard drives with a firewire cord as well as by USB. I would reccommend this product to anyone.

I was very happy with purchase price and shipping speed on this item. The drive works great right out of the box. I have hooked it up to my PC laptop, a desk PC and a Mac Quad, and it worked great with each. Wonderful device for backing up all of my computers.

Another great little toy. I have a couple others, but I like the power button on the front of this one, and it seems faster than the other "Book" models.

it didnt stress me to connect the hard drive to my compputer and it popped up ite away on the screen unlike the older computer i bought.

This and another Western drive that I have purchased work well for the tasks I bought them for.
However, both of the Western drives I have, one a passport and the other a Book Premium,would not work properly with my system. I'm running a top of the line (2 month old) laptop on XP Pro and neither would work dependably until I formatted them under the XP system. Using the Western formatting neither would work reliably.
Also be aware of which connections your drive has. The 500G unit I purchased only has Firewire 800 connections, nothing for 400 and that meant another $30 purchase for the drive to work with a laptop.
The other external drive I have is a Fallon, and it has worked perfectly from day one with no need to do anything. I'm not sure I'll stick with this brand in the future.

I bought my western digital for a great price and it has given me no problems. It is a little slower than expected but I have no complaints. Feel confident about buying one.
