This musical is still relevant today. The costumes and dialogue may date it which, for some, make it seem a bit hokey, but the music, dancing and classic story line are never out of style. Gangs, love, death, and family are as much a part of life today as the time the movie was made or even in Shakespeare's time for this is really a bit of Romeo and Juliet. The actors, dancers, and singers are very strong and well directed. The choreography and scenery are truly wonderful. A little on the long side, the music will keep you in your seats. Its no wonder this movie walked away with so many academy awards.
I'm starting a collection of all the musicals I've seen over the last 40 years. This is one of my favorites. The songs are beautiful, and one of them was actually my graduation song. Anytime when you can hold on to a memory that has touched your heart by way of music, movies, whatever, I think it's the best thing for your soul. I graduated in '69, when I listened to the music, it reminds me of a place that I was at peace with myself.
this movie was for a friend of mine who loved this movie, i had looked everywhere for it and had bid before and lost out, the expression on her face when i gave her this gift was enough, thank-you so much!!!
This is truly a classic...it takea romeo and juliet to a level that young teens can enjoy. It is brightly colored and entertaining....i still remember the first time I saw this musical. Some of the greats will never leave you.
Really liked some of the songs. Hadn't heard them in years and forgot they were from West Side Story. Funny, the setting is in the 1960's and the killing and mayhem has only gotten worse. I'll take small town life anytime. Did enjoy the story line of the show though. I bought it because my granddaughter is in our town play of the same name and I wanted her to see the difference in the movie version and our small town spin on the show. Recommend
Romeo and Juliet set in the Bowery of New York. Very good music by Leonard Bernstien and Stephan Sondheim, and great choreography by Jerome Robbins. The Jets and the Sharks are rival gangs fighting over the turf where they all live. The mixing of the two gangs is full of tention and each is ready to fight. When a rumble is called for that's when it hits the fan. Two gang members get killed and the sister of the Sharks leader falls in love with the friend of the Jets leader. Things go downhill from there. And in the end all that remains is Maria. This an updated version of Romeo and Juliet with a slight twist. This is another of my favorite movies that I have enjoyed for years and had to have in my collection.
I bought this because my young neice had never seen the money. I enjoyed everything about it. The quality was good and the packaging was new. Thank you for such a good product.
I love the choreography on this film; the dancing is electric and so full of life and energy. Rita Moreno is the gem of this film and stands out compared to the other characters. Miss Rita Moreno, you are classic!
I have always loved this 1950's style Romeo and Juliet. My sister took me to see it when I was young. I asked what it was about and she described it as a modern day Romeo and Juliet. I said, "What's that?" So to me Romeo and Juliet is more like an antique West Side Story. The songs are so well written as is the music and choreography. I bought this to add to my DVD collection.
My daughter and I enjoy watching musicals so I check them out at the library. She loved this movie after seeing it for the first time so I bought it for her so she can watch it as often as she likes.
Yhis film is timeless. The characters could be from today if you added more violence. Gangs have always been the method of protection against different ethnic and cultural groups. Wonderfully instilled story of love in different levels of mixed cultures.
Bought this DVD because I never had it on VHS. I had rented the movie once before and said if it is ever released on DVD format I'm bying it. It is a classic film with elements no longer seen in todays' films. Natalie Woods is excellent along with the rest of the cast. I really enjoy watching this film over and over...Definitely a high recommendation
What more can be said about the modern day(45-50 years ago) Romeo and Juliet. The storyline is excellent, acting is superb, and the music is out of this world. Now that it's on DVD it is much easier to enjoy, with no color fading and screen flickering,go to any scene you want at the touch of a button. This is a must watch for anyone....yeh the kids will say it's corny (and really it is),but is was awesome in the 60's and it still conveys the social impact it did then.Get it and enjoy!!!!
