Publisher's Note On the hot, humid afternoon of July 2, 1863, Confederate Brigadier General Jerome B. Robertson rode up to the 3d Arkansas and yelled, "We're going in there, men." At the time the soldiers did not know the names of the places where they would fight and die. Today we know them as Little Round Top -- Valley of Death -- Devil's Den. When we look out over the valleys and rolling hills, there is a great calm and beauty. Yet, in 1863 a young lieutenant described his panoramic view from Little Round Top: "The air was saturated with sulphurous fumes of battle and was ringing with the shouts and groans of the combatants." When this same officer's colonel was struck down in battle, the lieutenant wrote, "Up to that time in my life I had never felt a grief so sharply, nor realized the significance of death so well as then..." Heroes were made in these obscure locations, deeds were done that went untold, and courage, folly, and cowardice took their places in the ranks.
