The Well-Trained Mind by Jessie Wise, S. Wise Bauer, Susan Wise Bauer (1999, Hardcover)

This book was recommended to me by a friend who is homeschooling. She had looked through countless books and this one, was, according to her, the best. I am using it as supplemental schooling for my six-year-old, who is enrolled in public schooling, as she is advanced for her age and I want to give her more stimulating & challenging exercises that her classroom does not provide. I like that the book lists hundreds of resources to use & gives you specific information on finding them. It offers a unique view on a child's learning years and various levels of learning. There is a wealth of advice & suggestions for learning materials that covers preschool through high school levels. I like the authors' philosophy on how a child learns, as it makes sense to me. It uses a method called "The Trivium", which is no longer used in today's schools, which is a shame. I would highly recommend this book for homeschoolers or for supplemental schooling.

I believe this is a valuable resource book! Anyone homeschooling or thinking of homeschooling should read this one. It is a little intimidating, but that is because it is very thorough. You do not have to do every single thing suggested.

Great reference and resource tool to have on hand, whether you are wanting to homeschool in the classical mode, or desiring to enrich your child's brick and mortar school experience. The 1999 edition is valuable as it provides resources that the author recommended before her own materials were published. It is a very detailed how-to-manual, and a resource that can be referred to over and over again throughout the education of your children.

During the past three years of homeschooling, I've researched the classical approach to education by reading articles and somewhat weaving the philosophy into my children's education. I began using Susan Wise Bauer's "Story of the World" last year, and my eight year old son is a fan who will beg for more lessons, even asking me to repeat a few! It wasn't until I began reading "The Well-Trained Mind" though, that my husband and I truly understood and embraced a classical education for our children. This book serves as an excellent model for anyone just learning about classical education or someone who is ready to dive in. It is well written, with reference pages and detailed information on the philosophy itself and how to introduce it into your homeschool, plus an outline of each stage of your child's education. A wonderful read!

This is an excellent book for the homeschool parent or traditional school parent. This is an excellent reference book. I consider it a "bible" to my homeschooling efforts. You will not be disappointed.

I really like this book. My husband and I will embark upon the homeschooing venture next school year and I find this book to be full of lots of great information and valuable opinions.

I decided to purchase this book because I was interested in learning more about the Classical education approach to homeschooling. While I am not a homeschooler at the moment, I have always believed in it highly.
This book has been an excellent resource in terms of knowing roughly "what" the children should be learning. Then I decided "how" they were going to learn that material.
I dislike the fact that it is quite a large book! Takes alot of time to read through initially!
All in all, I thought this was an excellent book to buy. I will be keeping it as a reference for a long time!

This book is an excellent resource for helping children develop a life-long love of learning. Classical learning is based on the principles shared in this book. It is much more wholeistic than the piece-meal way students are taught in schools today.

This book is an excellent curriculum guide for homeschooling at all grade levels. I do not always use the curriculum recomended but it gives me an idea what to look for in each subject. The layout can be a bit confusing but once you get used to it I can flip to the part I need quickly.
