Porter Hall, TN works a fairly traditional furrow of roadhouse honky-tonk music while still managing to impress their own identity upon the listener. Fronted by vocalist/guitarists Molly Conley and Gary Roadarmel, the band benefits from two strong voices that also harmonize well together. Seemingly as influenced by Gram and Emmylou as by George and Tammy, the group brings an agreeable rugged quality to the production and arrangements. The songs bow to country tradition, from hard-hitting stomper to beer-swilling ballad, while still inserting the occasional left turn to help remind you that it's not 1960. Jason Sligh's mandolin adds the occasional touch of bluegrass to Porter Hall's bar room sound, but the main focus is clearly on the singing and songwriting abilities of Conley and Roadarmel, who offers a distinctive enough perspective to stand out amid the crowded alt-country masses.
