Album Notes Includes liner notes by Dennis McNally. Personnel: Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Grateful Dead. Recording information: 1971 - 1990. Though Bob Weir sang lead on roughly half of the Grateful Dead's songs, and co-wrote many of them, he was frequently overshadowed by Jerry Garcia. This collection attempts to redress the balance, presenting two disc's worth of Weir's finest work with and without the Dead. Weir's first solo album, ACE, was basically a Dead album in disguise, featuring the entire band backing him on material that would become a vital chunk of the Dead's repertoire. Most of that essential album is included here, alongside songs from Weir's later solo efforts, some slightly jazzier and a couple cast in a more hard-hitting rock format. In fact, only one song on the first disc (the funky "Feel Like a Stranger") is from a Dead album. Wisely, Weir's Dead work is presented on the second disc in live performances, which were always the band's strongest suit. The brotherly road anthem "Truckin'," flower-power love song "Sugar Magnolia," and percolating political commentary "Throwing Stones" are some of Weir's strongest compositions, represented here by powerful concert recordings. The Dead's Weir-led cover tunes take a bow as well, with the churning "New Minglewood Blues," calypso standard "Man Smart, Woman Smarter," and a transcendent take on Kris Kristofferson's country-rock classic "Me & Bobby McGee." Long overdue but comprehensive, WEIR HERE spotlights an underrated aspect of the Dead's magical sound.
