Synopsis
Set in 1967, this thought-provoking, enjoyable middle-grade novel is about the struggles of seventh-grader Holling Hoodhood, who is forced to read Shakespeare by his teacher, Mrs. Baker, on Wednesday afternoons while all the other kids are in religious instruction. This is just one small part of Holling's troubles. Bullies, family drama, and tons of embarrassment keep piling up, forcing Holling to figure out where he stands in a very confusing world. The author of this humorous and well-written book is also the author of LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY. A 2008 Newbery Honor Book, this wonderful read is also both a 2007 Publishers Weekly Best Children's Book and a Kirkus Reviews Best Young-Adult Book.
