The Webelos Cub Scout Book was the manual for youth in the Cub Scouting program, age 10 or 4th-5th grade (at least at the time of this manual).
The book contains information about Cub Scouting & the achievements that are to be performed in order to obtain the Webelos Rank (a patch) & the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting's highest honor (reprepresented by a pin in Cub Scouting, a patch in Boy Scouting). Most of the chapters in this book cover the 20 activity badges (pins) that Webelos can earn. There are color photographs & illustrations throughout the book.
The Webelos program replaced an earlier Cub Scouting program called Lion. The Lion manual first started in 1930. In 1954, a joint Lion-Webelos manual came out. In 1967, the first solely Webelos Scout Book appeared.
As indicated, the 1984 version is not the first Webelos manual, nor is the most recent. The long running 1967 version had a light blue cover & is probably the most well-know of the various Webelos manuals. A 1985 printing of the 1967 copyright has the Library of Congress Catalog #67-14536, an ISBN #0-8395-3232-6, & BSA catalog #3232.
This version (1987) is most easliy recognized by the Webelos Scout writing a "neon" script-style of the world "Webelos". A 1989 printing of the 1987 version has the ISBN #0-8395-3235-0 & BSA catalog #3235.
The 1987 version was the first version to carry the expanded Webelos program of 20 activity badges (full-color enameled pins). Prior to this version, the Webelos program only had 15 activity badges (silver-color nickel pins).
Post-1987 versions include the 1991 version (camping cover, 1991 copyright, ISBN 0-8395-3235-0, & BSA catalog #33235), the 1998 version (campfire cover, 1998 copyright, ISBN #0-8395-3108-7, & BSA catalog #33108), & the 2003 version (multi-color cover). A 2006 printing of the 2003 version has an ISBN #0-8395-3452-3 & BSA catalog #33452.
Many of the various versions, including printings of the 1987 version, carry an attached supplement for parents. In earlier versions it was called "Webelos Parent's Supplement, had an introduction to Scouting & information about Drug Abuse. Recent versions are called "How to Protect Your Children from Child Abuse: A Parent's Guide" & address that topic specifically.
Youth in the program now should use the latest manual. However, the various versions of the youth handbooks (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Lion, & Webelos) have become popular to collect by Cub Scouters. The 1987 version of the Webelos Scout Book might become an especially nice piece, since it did not last long & because of the program change from 15 to 20 activity badges.
