Based on the book of a similar title (We Were Soldiers Once and Men), this war film portrays the up-close, gory "face" of battle in the Vietnam Central Highlands. It vividly shows the courage and controlled terror and rage of infantrymen in close combat. Heart-rending portrayal of the dread and grief of family members whose loved ones were missing or killed in action. Excellent performances by Sam Elliott and Barry Pepper. Pepper's portrayal of Galloway shows how survival instincts can overpower one's conscience in the heat of battle. Mel Gibson gives a believable performance of Lieutenant Colonel Moore's unflappable courage under dire circumstances and his love for his soldiers and their well-being. One of the most accurate Hollywood portrayals of the horrorific reality of combat and the human story that underlies every victory and casualty. Not to be missed.

Very educational and great movie. Takes you into the soldiers homes, lets you get to know their families, then takes you on to the battle field. The special effects are very real. Hard to watch this movie without getting a tear to your eye. I'm more of a WWII fan and took a chance on this Vietnam movie (since it was (Non Fiction) and it what a great movie. 5 stars in my book. Well worth the money...

  We Were Soldiers

This movie, We were Soldiers, is a non-stop, in your face tale of a three day battle to capture a position and hold it! The use of helicopters as the calvary's horse was never (in war movies I've seen) so important and a vital, seemingful new use of them, as in this movie. I found very refreshing the real strategy of war, as the commanders of "both" sides were seen trying to outwit the other! This is a gory, bloody, real look at a group of men who come together, learn to love, depend, cry and fight as a single entity to do what was expected of them, even as the man next to him was killed. You will be drawn into this movie and by the end will be mentally and physically exhausted.

Based on the book of the same title by Hal Moore. Mel Gibson starred in this 2002 film production. In 1965, 400 American troops faced an ambush by 2,000 enemy troops in the Ia Drang Valley (also known as the Valley of Death), in one of the most gruesome fights of the Vietnam War. WE WERE SOLDIERS is a detailed recreation of this true story: of the strategies, obstacles, and human cost faced by the troops that participated. The story focuses on the lieutenant colonel that led the attack, Hal Moore (Mel Gibson), and a civilian reporter who accompanied them, Joseph Galloway (Barry Pepper), as well as a number of other soldiers who were involved. This is an unusual Vietnam film in that it also shows the North Vietnamese perspective on the battle. Basically, this is a moving film, which, by sticking close to the true stories of real soldiers, very effectively brings home the overwhelming horror of war.

Another movie with truth that shows something other than lets kill everyone and go home! You feel for the characters here you saw the struggle for life and family not just bombs and gun fire.Oh yeah it has some sweet action also so dont think its all drama and no action.

  We Were Soldiers (2002)

One of the most honest films of the decade. Picked as one of ten best motion pictures depicting war, of the combined 20th & 21st century. One of my personal favorites. Gibson is real, Elliot is just what a Sargeant Major should be, and Madeline Stowe portrays the 60's wife of a Vietnam era commanding officer. A must for all who like this type of film. You applaud, you cry, and America kicks some major ass. TRIVIA: The sargeant that leads the first patrol into the jungle is the "one-in-the-same" that plays the caucasian linebacker in "Remember the Titans". Great performances by all. Didn't get the credit it deserved. Nuf said.

I had read the book, We Were Soldiers Once, and Young, and wanted to see the movie. The movie, of the same name, was excellent. Generally speaking, movies made from books are disappointing, in that they leave much detail out. I was not disappointed in this movie. They stayed with the storyline, and the detail in the movie was was very rich, much more so than I had expected. It was very well done!

This movie is historically accurate even though they do not mention that in any descriptions I have seen. It obviously takes place during our first major buildup in Vietnam. It became known as the "Battle for the Central Highlands" in II Corps and battle stars were given to people from all branches of service who took part in whatever way. This battle took place in late 1965 and early 1966. My unit lost two aircraft as I recall. It was a bloody time for the US ground forces. I do not think our commanders and troops were aware of how dedicated and determined the enemy was. Again, it was the beginning of the war. I was in the USAF flying the C-130 transport aircraft into that area. We carried many bodies and wounded out of a PSP strip called An Khe. We took them to Tan Son Nut Air Base (Saigon) for treatment or for the morgue. I recall at one time that the Army ran out of body bags so we had to wear our oxygen masks to avoid the stench of death. On one occassion, our loadmaster had to hose out the back of our C-130 to get all the blood out.

We Were Soldiers is the best role I have seen Mel Gibson act in. The action packed, based on real events storyline is made all more real by the powerful role Gibson plays. You won't be disappointed.

  The REAL Deal
Review created: 01/03/07

Great flick!I Basically Mel Gibson leads the 7th Calvary (Custer's old outfit..I couldn't make this up) in the first organized helicopter attack in Vietnam and accidently drops into an ungodly hornet's nest of enemy soldiers that has them outnumbered, surrounded, and engaged in a three day battle for their very survival. I liked the fact that this is a true story and depicted as accurately as they could make it and I found the documentary and director's commentary version just as interesting as the movie itself. Mel Gibson, Sam Elliot and Barry Pepper are excellent in it and the story itself should satisfy any war-movie fan or history buff. Elliot is tougher than nails as Mel's number 2 man and Pepper plays a sensitive combat photographer who has to fight for his life like everybody else. You meet the real guys this is about in the documentary. You also get a look into the family aspect of war as the death notifications begin to hit the army neighborhood where they all live and their loved ones try to cope. This is serious stuff and you get the feeling that nobody walked away from this thing unchanged. You probably won't watch this again and again because of the inherent sadness of the subject matter but the story itself is unforgettable.

  Almost too real.

We Were Soldiers is based on actual events during the early part of the Vietnam War. It is a powerful story, well told, and with good actors. There are plenty of real heroes on both sides, and the main evil is war itself.

The combat scenes may be the most realistic "Hollywood" combat ever filmed.

This movie is way too intense for anyone under 12.

Friends who served in Vietnam, although not in this battle, say this is the most realistic film yet about that war.

Watch this film and find out what "Broken Arrow!" means.

  We Were Soldiers
Review created: 10/25/09

The story of the developement of the Air-mobile concept of the
US Army strategy during the Vietnam War begins this movie with
Mel Gibson (The Patriot, Braveheart, Signs, Payback, etc) playing
the commander of a battlion of the Air Mobile Brigade during the
early part of the war. It also re-enacts the first major battle
of the Vietnam War between the North Vietnamese and US forces
when 450 men of Gibsons battalion square off for a one month
campaign against 2,000 of the North Vietnamese and setting the
stage for the long war. Good combat action combined with plenty
of napalm and bullets will certainly make this a good movie for
war movie devotees. Madeleine Stowe (The General's Daughter,
China Moon, 12 Monkeys, Last of the Mohicans, etc) plays Gibsons
wife in the movie and gives insight into how wives and families
handled the war and actions that occurred on bases around the country
during the era of combat. Good - but not great movie- should give
a good nights entertainment to some drama lovers, but mostly to
action and adventure and war movie lovers.

We were well aware of the content of the movie, having seen if several times. My husband had also read the book. The movie is so close to the book version and what really happened in Nam. Everyone did such a fantastic job in their parts. I bought the movie because my husband wanted it to watch whenever he felt like it. We also gave one to a friend who likes it just as much. We watched the extra footage of the making of the film as well as the film on Father's Day. The dvd was a Father's Day gift. Would recommend the everyone to see.

  We Were Soldiers awesome film
Review created: 06/13/09

Great film. It is very realistic. I got it to let my 16 year old son to watch because I wanted him to understand what our soldiers in the past ,present and future really have to go through and the sacrifices they have to endure for our country and our way of life.I wanted him to know that freedom is the most expensive luxury and this film portrays a realistic and heartfelt war that our boys had to participate in.It is also Mel Gibson's greatest performance and I also intend for my son to watch Blackhawk Down and Saving Private Ryan.

This is a excellent movie about the Air Cav in Vietnam. The movie points out the fact that the soldiers who fought were human. Unlike what soldiers at the time of the war were thought of. These guys just like those fighting today deserve our gratitude and thanks. Lets all remember to thank a veteran.
