I bought this book because I am interested in blacksmithing as a hobby, it was recommended to me by a professional blacksmith. He said that it was possible to get into smithing with a minimum cash outlay, and this book explains ways to do it. If you are in a hurry to get off the ground with blacksmithing it may cost you a little more than $50 to get started, because he kept his costs down by shopping rummage sales and scrap yards. That takes time. That being said, this book provides great examples of ways to improvise to save money. It has a lot of information on some of the finer points of knife making, such as heat treating, without the need for expensive equipment. While the focus is on bladesmithing, this book is a great resource for anyone interested in trying their hand at blacksmithing on the cheap.
