Publisher's Note It was in the sixteenth century that Europeans began to craft watches by hand. This tradition thrived until the mechanization of the twentieth century replaced the individual maker with volume production. Hand methods were further eclipsed by the advent of the electronic watch in the 1960s; many feared that the mechanical watch would disappear entirely. George Daniels, however, saw an opportunity to rejuvenate this antique art. His first watch was completed in 1969 and aroused such interest that it generated a renaissance in the arts and skills of designing and making individual watches. Watchmaking describes in uncomplicated, practical language every aspect of construction. The immaculate line drawings show every manufacturing technique employed in the completed watches, illustrated by the color plates.
