Following up its lauded 2003 album, THE REMOTE PART, Scotland's Idlewild further hones a majestic pop sensibility on its fourth studio outing, WARNINGS/PROMISES. Like Coldplay, Idlewild often aims for soaring anthems, and when it hits the mark, as on the opening "Love Steals Us from Loneliness," the results are engaging and immediately appealing. Where Coldplay takes its cues from U2, however, Idlewild entrenches its core sound in R.E.M.'s jangly aesthetic (see "As If I Hadn't Slept," which could be mistaken for an unreleased early-1990s track by Michael Stipe and company). The Britpop quartet, led by vocalist Roddy Woomble, isn't afraid to venture out into more eclectic territory, though, as best evinced on the amped-up "I Want a Warning" and the buoyant, beat-driven "El Capitan." With its emotionally direct mood and melodic guitar hooks, WARNINGS/PROMISES is sure to appeal to many fans of the aforementioned bands, giving Idlewild a shot at a wider audience beyond the UK.

A few tracks still squeal with the white-noise aplomb of Idlewild's early work, but others, such as 'El Capitan,' actually manage to bridge both worlds; the brawny and the lit-major brainy.
