Great General Guide & Resource for Dates of Manufacture
    Review created: 07/25/07(updated 01/27/08)

When I travel to auctions and estate sales, I always have three books in tow: Dave Doty's Field Guide; The Standard Encylopedia of Carnival Glass; and this Warman's series guide by Ellen T. Schroy.

Schroy's large-format guide supplements the other two books very well, because it offers multiple photographs of patterns in various shapes and colors where the other books may show only one picture. The quality of the printed photography in Schroy's guide is also outstanding and unequaled by many of the smaller and less detailed pictures provided in the other guides. Most notably, Schroy's guide gives the dates of manufacture for almost all of the pieces listed. This indispensable information is excluded inexplicably from the other two guides (which may lead to considerable extra work for any seller who relies solely on them). One of Schroy's guide's finest features is its in-depth discussion of carnival glass colors, accompanied by well-chosen illustrations. WARMAN's CARNIVAL GLASS has the most detailed and useful descriptions of various greens and blues of any resource, and if you sell or buy carnival glass, you'll know how critical this problematic area can become.

Although the price guide information accompanying the text is not as systematic or comprehensive as you’ll find in the book values list of The Standard Encylopedia of Carnival Glass, Schroy’s figures tend to be more realistic: they’re based on actual auction sales rather than representing the inflated prices associated with standard book values. Schroy's book also offers a useful updated list of collectors' clubs and auction houses dealing in carnival glass.

[ADDED NOTE: This book is published by KP Books; pub. date 2004; 256 pages total, with color photographs; available as large format paperback - 8.25 x 10.75 inches.] PLEASE LEAVE YOUR VOTE ON THIS REVIEW!
