IntroductionThe movie Warm Springs was very well written and acted by all the "players."
I enjoyed this movie a lot, because I spent time in the Roosevelt Warm Springs for Rehabilitation Institute myself, recovering from burn injuries. I learned how to be a person again at the Institute, and I feel completely at "home" there each time I visit.
What FDR did for persons with disabilities is remarkable. He encouraged American NOT to hide their family members away or place them in institutions, but to educate them and help them be self sufficient instead of being dependent on family or the government for help.
This movie shows FDR's own struggle to become as functional as possible. I am so amazed FDR didn't "give up" and quit. He KNEW the public's attitude towards handicapped people during this time in our history, the attitude being, if one had a physical disability, one *must* also have a mental disability. FDR proved America wrong on that thought process, because of his overcoming as much as possible his physical limitations.
One thing most people do not realize about FDR is many of the things his staff invented to help the physically disabled people of America are still used today. FDR wanted the best for people afflicted with Polio, and as a result he started the March of Dimes researching for a cure or vaccine for polio. The brace shop where he had his braces made, continues to provide this support today.
The original pools are open for viewing and on special occasions the public can swim for a price to contribute to a fund raiser.
The movie is an eye opening showing of how things were, attitudes, prejudices, and fear of the unknown.
I would recommend this movie to anyone, for the historical content, and the fine acting and portrayal that has been featured in this film.
I bought this movie because is it about a place that is near and dear to my heart. I learned so much more from the movie.
