3X US President FDR's Activism & Struggles with Polio

Franklin D. Roosevelt's struggles with late onset polio after effects were largely kept out of the media from 1933-1945 during his 3 terms as US President. "Warm Springs" is an intimate drama starring renowned British actor Kenneth Branagh as FDR, Cynthia Nixon as FDR's very active & socially influential wife, Eleanor Roosevelt & US Oscar winning actor, Kathy Bates, as a physical therapist at Warm Springs, who treated & began to have remarkable results doing warm water therapy for people with polio after effects.

Warm Springs is the name of the place where FDR began swimming in order to 'cure' himself of polio after effects shortly before he became the US President. It was at first a motel with a large pool. But after its able-bodied patrons were bigoted & ignorant enough to refuse to swim with the people with polio after effects who FDR attracted to the Warm Springs pool, FDR convinced his wife & her brother to help him purchase the place & turn it into a polio treatment center.

It's a true story. One that has been kept 'under the carpet' for over half a century due to prejudices against people with disabilities. FDR believed his political career was over due to his physical limitations that prevented him from walking without much assistance. Disabilities were viewed as character weaknesses, more or less, & would certainly not be becoming for a potential US President.

The film's director, Joseph Sargent, was fortunate to have a marvelous cast, a heck of a true story & fine screenplay about the WWII & Great Depression Era US President. Kathy Bates gives a superb performance as the Warm Springs miracle worker of physical therapy. Kenneth Branagh does not disappoint as the most convincing FDR I've ever enjoyed on the screen. Cynthia Nixon, perhaps, has the toughest character to portray because the real First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was larger than life before, during & after FDR took over the Presidency. I feel she succeeds with flying colors.

In all, "Warm Springs" is a fine historical film that could interest a wide variety of audiences.

Branagh & Nixon Shine in This Superb Film

Branagh gives a moving performance as FDR in this exquisitely directed film by Joseph Sargent. Branagh's brilliant portrayal will acquaint you with many nuances of this remarkable man's personality -- unfaithful husband, political wiz, self-absorbed aristocrat, and champion of the handicapped and downtrodden. Cynthia Nixon nearly steals the show. Her portrayal of Eleanor Roosevelt rivals that of Branagh's and in some scenes she outshines him. Paymer, Bates, Tim Blake Nelson, and Alexander all weigh in with very strong supporting performances, as do most of the rest of the cast. This fine dramatic film succeeds by deftly weaving the political and personal events of the Roosevelts' lives and careers during the late 1920s and early 1930s. By the time the film reaches its dramatic conclusion, viewers will have glimpsed some of FDR's and Eleanor's most formative life experiences -- those which surely enabled him to be "the right man in the right place" during some of our nation's most crucial times and her to be one of the world's leading humanitarians of the 20th century. Don't miss this superb film.

This is a wonderful, insightful movie not only about Roosevelt's personal struggles but about prejudice borne of ignorance, about Elinor's rise to a national spokeswoman and about how adversity brings people together. It's about people believing they can be more than they are. It was terrific.

  Warm Springs and FDR
Review created: 04/26/09

I don't want to repeat what others have said so I will keep it short. An excellent movie. I work at Roosevelt's Little WHite House and was able to watch the filming some.
We read the script, to make sure all was as close as possible to being accurate, since we (the staff) are biased.
Margaret Nagle did a fine job.
The movie covers the years 1924 - 1928 with some flash backs to 1918 (Lucy) and 1921 (when he got polio)
FDR came to Warm Springs in'24 and for the next for years, experienced rural American life at the onset of the Great Depression. He spent 2/3 of his fortune on a run down resort, created the nations first treatment center for polio and built a place to live. The film ends in 1928 as FDR leaves Warm Springs to re-enter his political career as Gov of NY, just before the Great Depression officially occurs.
It would not be until 1932 that FDR would build his Little White House and hopefully Nagle will write another sequel to the movie.
You can find a new copy of the DVD on ebay for as low as 3 bucks and some for couple more with free shipping.
It is worth watching at least once just to see the story of how our only 4 time elected president came to be. And how he overcame his fears to tell us that the only thing we had to fear was fear.

I too am a polio survivor and I am almost like he little girl because I was three when I first walked. So it shows my life and what it means to survive polio. Not many things relate to that and this is an excellent portrayal of that. It's historical as well as entertaining. Thanks for making a film that I can relate to as being just like me.I am now 60 and have 3 children and 6 grands and I mean they are grand!God Bless.

  A movie everyone should see

This is just a well made movie, plain and simple. The acting is superb, with this being one of Kenneth Branagh's greatest roles, in my opinion. The historical value makes it well worth watching, but the courage that this movie inspires makes it a must see for anyone interested in this genre of film.

I enjoyed it, but it wasn't always historically accuurate. It does reveal the depth of the man and what we owe him and Eleanor, of course.

Really enjoyed learning the background of Roosevelt's polio. Showed how the effect of his having the disease put things into action that has continued to affect our country to this day. Very engrossing.
