Sometimes experiencing Holdsworth is the equivalent of the after-effect of a suddenly de-actioned shift; WARDENCLYFFE TOWER, though not exactly a kick-ass record of postmodern fusion, still offers a robust entree of textured sounds that merge Holdsworth's typical style with softly air-brushed ballads and some new and neat moves.
The Star Trek imagery is still apparent ("Zarabeth") and with it, the lush, soapy strains with which Holdsworth began to dabble on ATAVACHRON. But these are offset by the adept fretwork found on the title cut and "Against the Clock," which harks back to the days of Holdsworth's associations with Bill Bruford and the classic ONE OF A KIND sessions. Holdsworth may be an acquired taste for some, since his music is colored by a sort of quaint anachronistic feel despite the love for state-of-the-art instrumentation and production values. Nevertheless, WARDENCLYFFE TOWER would have been as equally welcomed in the early '80s as in new millennium.
