Description: Though it only lasted two seasons, the late-'80s television series WAR OF THE WORLDS fashioned a worthy, imaginative sequel to the classic 1953 film adaptation of H.G. Wells's terrifying tale of alien invasion. Picking up 35 years after ...

Everything from the 1980's is popular again, but the main reason this series finally saw the light of day (though in my opinion it is VERY deserving anyway) was because of the 2006 big screen remake.
If you were a fan of the classic War of the Worlds (1950's) this series takes off from that storyline and expands on it. Now the aliens are bodysnatches (after being exposed to nuculear waste) and continue to try and take over the planet. Naughty aliens.....
The episodes can be a bit hammy, but it's great fun and a blast from the past. My only complaints is I wish there would have been cast interviews (20 year reunion/reflection or something to that effect).
My other complaint is there is still no second/final season dvd set. You know, the one with Adrian Paul (before Highlander). Yes, it was weaker, kind of ignored the first season and what went before and killed some of our favorite characters BUT it would be nice to have the set....lol.

Rediscovered. The New/Old War of the Worlds

It is great to see this long lost Sci Fi series back in circulation. It was a very early pre-X Files Fox production. We haven't seen this series since the 80s! It was fun then and it's fun now.
Based on the original George Pal feature version of War Of The Worlds, the show was retro and contemperary at the same time. The Martians have become vicious body snatchers and begin to pick up where they left off invading the world. The classic Martian war machines even show up once in a while. Great fun for the older fans! The first Season is the best of the two. Because of its short run this series is seldom rebroadcast. So this format is perfect!
DVD sets like this are invaluable to fans. I can only hope that this company or others will follow this example and do the same with more short run sci fi series. Younger fans never get to see these shows. Even the cable channals neglect older shows if they do not have lots of episodes. This makes short run sci fi series perfect for these sets.
Sci Fi and Horror are presold comodities. So I hope we see more sets like this. There is so much out there than the same old public domain Westerns and Bela Lagosi movies.

Positives!!!
In addition to it just existing at all, the price of the set is very reasonable. That should take away the hesitency of the buyer to try out an unfamilier product. The packaging is more compact than standerd DVD sets.In one sence one might think it makes the set look cheep. So what? It is! That's a good thing! The smaller packaging makes for easier storage for the insatiable collector.(like me) Color quality is good and the DVDs work dependably. The menues and text are all as one might expect from higher priced products.

Negatives!!!
The over all quality of the images is somewhat soft. This is not serious enough to detract from the viewers enjoyment on a standerd sized TV set. But it does show on the larger screens. Its not bad enough to discourage a buyer. This is just an honest observation. The sound is very good. The only other outstanding flaw is the acting. The scripts are slightly thin ( as are most made for TV sci fi series). It is hard to seperate shallow writing and direction from bad acting. When a cast has nothing to work with you get what you get. We have all seen much worse.
Fans of any movie genre are very forgiving.

Over all I am delighted to have this series and enjoy seeing it again after 20 years of laying dormant. Come to think of it, that's just about as long as the Martians lay dormant before the whole story line began.
