The War (DVD, 1999)

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I watch it all the time. It has the best heart-warming story. It's about a family whose dad, Kevin Costner, goes to Vietnam and comes back with a lot of mental problems. He can't hold down a job because of the flash backs he has (you learn throughout the movie what happend to him and why he has the flash backs, which is also very touching). It's about his kids, their friends, and the war they have against the neighborhood family who are bullies and own the junk yard. They live in the country and it reminds me of the fun I used to have growing up as a kid and things we used to do. It is so true to life. I think everyone can connect with this movie, because all of us have probably thought or done some of the hilarious things they do in this movie. It also teaches lots of morality. Some parts are very touching and some parts, you are asking "Why on earth did he do that?" and the answer given to this is so profound. All you can think is "WOW"!! The whole movie is about morality, and trying to teach your kids to think and do the right thing. There are parts of the movie you will bawl and parts of it you will be on the edge of your seat. I just can't say enough good about this movie! I bought two (2) one for myself, and one for my 10 year old grandson, which is one of his favorite movies also. When he comes to visit, he always wants to watch it. I think it's one of the greatest movies of all time!

I love the interaction in the family and the values being taught to the children by example. Never hear "because I said so" in this movie. When Costner's character gives away the cotton candy because he says the kids look like they haven't been given anything in a long time, it doesn't get any better. I also like the interaction between the kids. This movie hit all my emotions. I laughed, cried, felt sad, then happy. A real roller coaster of feelings. A KEEPER.

I LOVED THIS MOVIE SIMPLY BECAUSE IT'S GREAT. GREAT CAST, GREAT STORY. I HAD SAW IT YEARS AGO AND THEN RAN ACROSS IT ON E-BAY ON DVD AND HAD TO HAVE IT.IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT - GET IT. THE WHOLE FAMILY WILL ENJOY IT

The War is a must see for all ages!!! It will make you laugh and cry and laugh some more!!! I can also say it has good moral values and life lessons that are great to review again and again. If you think life was tough for now a days, you'll appreciate everything you have as you watch this humble family fend for ends meat and come together amid hardship and trial after trial. By the end, you will have a greater appreciation for what really matters in life.

This movie greatly depicts the very heart and spirit that many americans have displayed while tackling heartaches and hardships. It is a must buy for good family entertainment although there is some amount of children using bad language. A great all around movie. Another awesome and inspiring role played by all of these actors.

This movie has been our family favorite for years. My boys now 17 and 20 still can't wait to watch it. It has great acting and great characters.

Set in a small Mississippi town and centered on a children's battle over a tree house, "The War" is an allegory about love, death, pacifism, family values and the spiritual and physical wounds of Vietnam. To no small degree it is also about movie stars, who have the power to transform platitudes into warm, affecting insights when they make their presence sufficiently persuasive on screen.

"The War" has the benefit of two such presences: Kevin Costner, who is at his most disarming in the role of Stephen Simmons, a Vietnam veteran having trouble returning to his wife and children (the year is 1970), and Elijah Wood, who plays his son. Mr. Costner's folksy sincerity is enough to lure the Spanish moss right off the live oaks, and he works hard in the potato fields the way only a major movie star can. He's effortlessly appealing, and Mr. Wood holds up his end of the story with equal assurance.

I saw this film for the first time on TV a few weeks ago and it was amazing. As soon as it went off, I came here on eBay to buy a copy of it for my girlfriend. We watched it together a few days ago, and she loved it as well...I can't even count the number of times she cried. This film does a great job of showing the struggles of life in the early 70's. You will see a little bit of poverty, racism, post-war struggles, strong friendships, and a strong family - all in one film. You MUST buy this film!

I loved this movie for as long as I could remember and to now own it, I'm enthralled! It teaches really great lessons we all should learn in life. Just remember, don't judge someone by their looks.

I had watched this movie on TV with my grandchildren and we loved it. It was really inspirational and funny at the same time. I had it recorded on tvo recorder but lost it. I was glad to find it on e-bay.

It's a great movie about love, war, bigotry and doing the right thing. I recommend it for families with older children. The kids in this movie did a great job, watching them brought back memories of what it's like to be children. A+ Movie!

the story is so good and the main actors are children even though kevin costner is in it a movie most people are not familiar with. i bought it because its one of the greatest films.

I have owned the vhs version of this movie for years and wanted a DVD for the future.
It is an excellant movie for young and old with a very good lesson for every child and every adult. A great family movie. Something for everyone-humor,love,crisis,drama,fear,,courage,bravery,love,hate,prejudice and pride. Every family should have this in their video library!

I watched part of this movie on one of the movie channels, decided that I wanted a copy for myself since it was so good.

Before Elijah Wood headed up the cast in The 'Lord of the Rings' he made a real gem in 'The War', back in 1994, starring Kevin Costner. Great entertainment and an uplifting ending, what more could you wish for?
