War of the Buttons

Fergus and Gerome.
Two boys, separated by a river and its bridge, more similar to each other than different, that is, power and control. I enjoyed the film because the climax came at the right time – at the end of the film. The pace of the film was sensitively developed in keeping with the subject matter of kids pretending to bring their Extra-Terrestrial ideal down to Earth.
The ideal revolved around the selling of hospital tickets for the local hospital. Territory had to be considered since this was big business to all the kids living on either side of a river located in West Cork County, Ireland.
The Carricks lived on one side of the river and the Ballys on the other. One can infer that there had been problems between the two sides before this film was made. But the hospital tickets generated an intense competitive drive between the kids. Per’aps it might bring more business to t’ospital! But, actually, the kids never did hurt each other. They always left it up to the parents or adults to punish them. The buttons on their shirts and pants is the device that is used to bring on the punishment. A story of the misuse and abuse of an ideal.
