Album Notes
This collection contains 19 of the 105 tracks contained in the Onobox set.
WALKING ON THIN ICE, a handy 19-track condensation of 1991's four-disc ONOBOX collection, presents an illuminating and remarkable overview of the solo work of pop music's most misunderstood artist. WALKING is named after the song Ono and John Lennon were working on the night of Lennon's murder. Because Ono was introduced to the general public by such intentionally chaotic Ono/Lennon collaborations as 1968's controversial TWO VIRGINS, public perception of her work is limited to the image of the tiny Japanese woman yowling and ululating over squalling guitar feedback and manipulated tapes. On the '70s and '80s solo albums documented here, however, Ono favors a provocative blend of basic rock & roll, free jazz, and delicate Asian melodies. She tops her tunes with articulate, often political, and sometimes angry lyrics. The best songs here, including "Death Of Samantha," "Yangyang," and "Give Me Something," are intelligent, forceful and fascinating.
