One of the best movies I’ve seen lately

I’m really glad that they made this movie. It made me understand and appreciate what all the hype was about regarding Johnny Cash because he was before my time and so I never knew much about him as a person. I liked that both actors were made to actually sing and play their instruments. Acting, on both parts, was phenomenal. It’s definitely one of the better movies I’ve seen lately.

In WALK THE LINE, Joaquin Phoenix shows that he's come a long way since his role as the crazy Caesar in GLADIATOR.

Those going into WALK THE LINE thinking it's a comprehensive film bio of Johnny Cash may perhaps come out slightly disappointed. While there's a relative brief sequence of his early years growing up on an Arkansas cotton farm, an even briefer sequence of his time in the Air Force in the early 50s, the film really begins in 1955 when, failing as a door-to-door salesman and wannabe gospel singer, he cuts a rock 'n' roll record for Sun Studios in Memphis and his career as a CW crooner takes off. The film ends with his marriage to June Carter in 1968. In between, against the backdrop of early hits, it focuses on his failed marriage to first wife Vivian (Ginnifer Goodwin), his self-destructive abuse of amphetamines, and rocky relationship with singer/actress Carter (Reese Witherspoon), a twice-divorced single mother of two.

The real treat of WALK THE LINE is watching Phoenix and Witherspoon amaze with Oscar-caliber dramatic performances. Who would have suspected that the latter was capable of anything other than light comedy?

In case you haven't seen the film and you're wondering, Phoenix and Witherspoon themselves sing the Cash/Carter material; they're surprisingly effective. Mind you, I've never been such a Cash fan that I've possessed any of his albums, and I've only previously downloaded one of his songs ("City of New Orleans"). Indeed, when Phoenix and Witherspoon recreate the Cash/Carter duet of "Jackson", my first thought was: Didn't Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood do that?

Coming out of the screening, my wife remarked that Phoenix sounded very much like Johnny himself. My response was a non-committal but prudent "Mmmm". Back home at the computer, I downloaded a couple more Cash songs, including his "Jackson" duet with Carter. To my ears, the real Cash had a singing voice that was slightly hoarser, and with a more pronounced slow drawl than Joaquin's version. While that doesn't detract from the actor's performance, it may cause purists to grumble.

The film's opening scene is of two guards on a tower at Folsom Prison listening to the bass "thump, thump, thump" washing over the prison yard from the hall in which Cash is about to perform his famous concert before the inmates. My wife and I were sitting in the front row of the studio screening theater and the sound reverberated through our bones. I knew then that WALK THE LINE was going to be an exceptional film.

I really didn't know anything about Johnny Cash or June Carter before seeing this movie. All I really knew was that Johnny Cash had recently passed away not to long ago. This movie opened me up to a whole other kind of music. Through most of the movie my foot was tapping along to the beat.

This movie shows a great man who had many struggles throughout his life. Everything from wanting his fathers love to drugs and drinking. It also shows a woman who knows what she wants. The two of them fit together perfectly. If you don't know who Johnny Cash is, you should still is this movie! It was one of the best movies I probably have ever seen. The actors were great and the music was wonderful!

I think Joaquin Phoenix is terrific, but when I heard he was cast in this Johnny Cash biopic, I had my doubts. I was wrong. Both Joaquin and Reese Witherspoon are absolutely fabulous in this surprisingly romantic film. It's solid from top to bottom and well worth seeing.

I must say.. To me this movie was excellent. I watched this movie and it right about 2 hours long and it just flew by. I must say I Knew NOTHING about Mr. Cash, other than he was a good song writer and good performer and had many hits for the older generation.. I am in the twenty something age bracket.. As I watched this movie I watch Cash ( Joaquin Phoenix) Struggle from the ealry ages of his life in Arkansas to becoming the Contry legend and recording star at Sun Records in Memphis. The battles with his Father his small stint in the army to the troubles of his first marriage. All the way through his first album and tour where he met June Carter ( Reese Witherspoon), Who Was a counrty singer who did not have the pipes to sing.. Well Johnny fell in lover with her, and it takes you on a wild ride as June battles with her inner demons!! This movie Was Fantastic.. If you are on the fence on this move I suggest you watch it

My grade A- Great acting, Great Singing (actors all sang there own parts) I wish This movie was longer!!!

This movie was outstanding and Reese & Joaquin did a wonderful job portraying Johnny Cash and June Carter--Joaquin sounded so much like Johnny it was like Johnny was alive all over again... And it also made me wonder if Reese ever thought about going into singing herself or if she had in the past!?...she was a wonderful singer..

This movie also helped me learn alot of Johnny Cash that I didn't know.. I've learned so much about him and also his relationship with June Carter...

The movie felt so real, and Reese and Joaquin were just truly amazing--I could never tire of watching this movie.

J.R. Cash takes an early interest in music while growing up on an Arkansas cotton farm in the Great Depression. He is very close to his elder brother Jack, who dies in an accident involving a table saw in 1944 when J.R. is out fishing. His guilt about this event is not helped when his father blames him as well, so it comes as a welcome escape when he is old enough to enlist in the air force and is sent to Germany. Inspired by a film he sees there, Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison (1951) he composes a song, "Folsom Prison Blues." Leaving the air force Cash marries and attempts to succeed as a door-to-door salesman in Memphis, Tenn. but his heart is in music and he succeeds in an audition with Sam Phillips at Sun Records. Soon Johnny is touring and meets June Carter, who has been a country star since childhood. Although they are drawn to each other, they are married to others. Touring takes a toll on Johnny's marriage, and in the 1960's he becomes addicted to amphetamines. His marriage ends and June helps him beat the drug dependency. Reading fan letters from prisoners inspires Cash to perform a concert at Folsom Prison, which leads to a very successful album. June finally accepts Johnny's proposal of marriage given as they perform together on stage in Ontario in February, 1968

Loved This Movie.... Didn't hurt that I was a Johnny Cash fan years ago!

The plot moved along nicely, the actors were very good at their roles,
and I thought that I really was watching Johnny & June during their performances onstage!

Definitely worth viewing if you are a Johnny Cash fan, or a country western fan!

When I was a little girl I remember my dad listening to the likes of Johnny Cash and June Carter. Whenever we went somewhere in the old red pickup truck dad would have some country station on that was playing Johnny Cash. I was able to memorize many of his songs.
Seeing Walk the Line brought those songs to life for me.
I love seeing movies about Musical legends and what their lives were like. The hardships that Johnny Cash faced in his life were so surreal. I'd like to say he overcame them but as the movie portrays life's experiences ate at him.
Juoaqin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon make an awesome team as Johnny Cash and June Carter.

Walk The Line talks the talk

This is what I call excellence in movie making.
This is a story about people; albeit some famous ones, but a human story that real people can touch and feel and relate to. It is a love story, a living story and a story of facing challenges in life and finding winning ways.
Even if you forget about the great music, even if you remove the story book marriage proposal on a theatre stage that just doesn't happen in most of our lives, you get to see and feel man and women. You can reduce this musical movie to pure drama, and this one would continue to ring my bell.
Excellence in acting and superior Direction - BRAVO ! If you FEEL life, this is a must see.

This was a wonderful movie. I have to say though at first I thought it was going to be boring. After it got going, it was really good. I couldn't tear myself away. Reese Witherspoon was great as always. She is such a good actress. This movie made laugh and cry. It is one of the best movies I have seen. Regardless if you are a Johnny Cash fan or not you will love this movie. I know because he was before my time, and I was reluctant to watch it. I am so glad that I did. It is a very romantic love story and accurate display of what drugs can do to ones life. It also shows that you can overcome it.

  Walking a SOLID Line

Walk The Line was one of the many movies I watched on a long plane trip to Japan. Instead of sleeping… I was entranced by the biographical life of Johnny Cash, and the likeness of which Joaquin Phoenix had to the late crooner.
Reese Witherspoon’s portrayal of June Carter, was a far cry from her blonde bimboesque character in Legally Blonde. (An Oscar well deserved in my books)
This is a true life love story with all the bumps and bruises that come along with love and life.
A good DVD to rent and watch on a quiet evening, with a big bowl of popcorn.

This movie is a great tribute to a legend like Johnny Cash. I was a little concerned about Phoenix and Witherspoon tackling his songs (especially since Johnny has such a deep penetrating voice) but both actors did Johnny and June proud! Phoenix really picked up on some of the nuances in Cash's character and Reese gave her best acting to date! A beautiful biography and love story, a must-see!

This movie has a little bit of everything - from drama to comedy to heartbreak. Whether or not you have ever heard a Johnny Cash song, and even if you're not a big fan, I don't think there is any way anyone could not enjoy this movie. The acting and singing by both Phoenix and Witherspoon is superb - noone else could have performed as well in these two roles of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash - the incredible range of skills possessed by these two actors is unbelievable. Although there is references to drugs and what little sex there is, I believe it is a movie that can be seen and enjoyed by the entire family - I know my whole family did!

Walk the Line: Outstanding in Every Way!
Review created: 03/24/06

4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

"Walk the Line" is an incredible movie; there are some movies where it is difficult to decide whether to rent or buy, but this is not one of those movies. Buying "Walk the Line" was one of the easiest decisions I made this month, and the reason for this is that the performances are superlative.

Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix really bring Johnny Cash and June Carter to life, and you can tell that their performances are heartfelt and that they are giving 110%. I usually prefer science fiction, horror or comedy movies to ones depicting actual people and events, but I LOVE this movie. I couldn't believe that the movie was over two hours long; it felt less than half of that! It is both very moving and very entertaining, and in the process, I learned a great deal about Johnny Cash's life and why he was so famous (I'm 25, so pretty much all I knew about Cash was that he was the country singer who did "Ring of Fire" and "I've been Everywhere.") It doesn't feel like they are giving you a biography, though; the movie draws you in extremely quickly and you don't feel like it's happening to someone else and you're being retold it.

It was a nice touch to have the song in the end credits be performed by Cash and Carter. I almost couldn't tell the difference between when they were singing and when Phoenix and Witherspoon are singing! I am especially amazed how well Phoenix did, concidering that when he accepted the role, he couldn't really sing or play anything on a guitar for that matter. Johnny Cash and June Carter could not have picked two better actors to portray them on the big screen!

In conclusion, this is an outstanding movie in every way. Even if you are not usually a fan of the genre, I think you will enjoy this movie. I encourage you to rent it, and I think that after you do you'll do exactly what I did and add this gem to your movie collection.
