Album Notes 2 LPs On 1 C.D. Liner Note Author: Gerry Woodage. These two albums were originally released in 1964 and 1965 and are prime efforts by the Ventures. This instrumental combo, which knew how to keep things lively and well-paced, covers an assortment of hits from the era, along with a handful of originals. "Walk Don't Run '64" was the second recording of a song the band first released three years prior. It was a massive hit in the summer of its titled year. The sounds that captured the public's imagination--contrasting guitar tones and sultry rhythms--can be found in abundance throughout these two-dozen selections. An organ and beeping sound effects punctuate "Diamond Head," and their own "Peach Fuzz" is highlighted by a sassy fuzzed lead guitar. Mel Taylor's drumming swings and breathes with the subtleties of a jazzer, making him the band's real secret weapon. The Ventures made these covers their own by showcasing electric guitars to stunning effect--"Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" is sheer rock dazzle.
