  Not my style

There are some entertaining stories, but as soon as I get interested in the story, Carlos Eire cuts it off and moves on to something else. I do not like this style of writing and I often find myself asking - "what is the point of this book?" I bought this book because I'm a member of a book club and one of my friends selected it. It definitely is not something I would personally recommend.

  Richly evocative, detailed, and touching
Review created: 08/12/08

This book is so descriptive of a child's-eye worldview that it evoked my own nostalgia. At the same time it takes its place with the Kite Runner, Persepolis, and One Thousand Splendid Suns as a wrenching yet hopeful story of third-world revolutionary war and political strife. A richly detailed eye-opener to the struggles and courage of the victims of the vicissitudes of civic upheaval.
