In the early '90s, while New York-born animator Elinor Blake was toiling away on THE REN AND STIMPY SHOW and moonlighting in the indiepop trio The Shitbirds, she met singer/songwriter/producer Tim Hensley and created the persona of April March. Whereas such later releases as the CHICK HABIT and CHROMINANCE DECODER albums have a strong '60s French pop influence, March's 1993 debut, VOODOO DOLL, takes its cues from Lesley Gore and Nancy Sinatra.
Produced and largely written by Hensley, VOODOO DOLL's kitschy fun includes such wildly enjoyable silliness as "How To Land A Man" and the brilliant "Stay Away From Robert Mitchum." The album is recorded with a sense of early-'60s girlie-pop splendor. Though Blake quickly abandoned this style, VOODOO DOLL is still pure fun.
