Friends since their bands toured together in the 1980s, Scott McCaughey and Steve Wynn are also baseball obsessives, and the supergroup the Baseball Project is their tribute to the game they love. (R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and Golden Smog drummer Linda Pitmon complete the quartet.) McCaughey has been one of indie rock's funniest and most sardonic lyricists since the days of his 1980s band, the Young Fresh Fellows, and the lyrics of songs like "Ted F------ Williams" and "The Death of Big Ed Delahanty" are among his sharpest and wittiest. Wynn's hard-charging guitar work melds perfectly with Buck's trademark jangle for a refreshing updating of the sound of '80s college radio.
