Movie Description The Virgin Prunes were born out of the Dublin-based social club known as the Village, which also included Bono and the Edge of U2; the considerably less commercial Prunes attained cult status but shunned the mainstream music industry. Their act consisted to a large degree of performance art, employing a confrontational style that confounded audiences and was way ahead of its time. Created in 1977 by Gavin Friday, the original lineup included Guggi (Derek Rowen) Dav-id (David Watson, vocals), Strongman (Trevor Rowen, bass,) Dik Evans (guitar), and Pod (Anthony Murphy, guitar). Signed to Rough Trade by the end of the decade, the band's first album, A NEW KIND OF BEAUTY, was released in the unconventional format of a series of 7- 10- and 12-inch singles, and epitomized the group's avant-garde, boundary crossing approach to music making. Although the Prunes became progressively disenchanted with the music business, as well as more accessible in their style and manner, they continued to explore the ideas of purity and beauty in their music throughout the 1980s.
This release consisting of live footage from the band's revolutionary performances captures the band at the height of their career, as they meld music and performance art in a surreal spectacle of new wave madness. Spoken word and set pieces designed by various band members highlight the act, and the song list includes "Pagan Lovesong" and "A New Form of Beauty."
