Album Notes Recorded live in Portchester, New York, February 1971. This is one of those live albums that's at least as notable as a time capsule of a specific era as it for its music. It catches this seminal Grateful Dead spin-off band on its very first tour, and in the waning days of the counterculture, although no one knew it at the time. The New Riders Of The Purple Sage's brand of stoner country-rock was still pretty much a novelty when VINTAGE was recorded in early 1971. The upstate New York hippie audience seems to be, as they say, into it, perhaps not surprisingly given the freshness of the young band's performances. Highlights include lead singer John Dawson's inspired yodelling on the coda of "Cecilia" (take that, Slim Whitman--take that, Focus!), and part-time member Jerry Garcia's fluent pedal steel guitar work throughout.
