I bought this monitor two years old and slightly used and it exceeds my standards. I have a 22" widescreen LCD that I use for myself, and the picture quality on this Viewsonic looks just as good, though obviously the picture isn't as big.
The stand is a bit stiff so the base needs to be held down when adjusting, but it's very sturdy. Brightness and contrast levels are decent -- not too bright, not too dim. It also has a backlight tube on both the top and the bottom of the screen so the lighting is distributed evenly for a better vertical viewing angle. Even though it only came with a VGA cable, it looks great and I can't tell the difference between it and DVI.
Overall, this is probably one of the best 17" monitors I've used, and it looks better cosmetically too, with the thin frame around the edge and the lack of tacky speakers that would sound like junk anyway.
