Album Notes Personnel includes: Chad Wackerman; Allan Holdsworth (guitar); Jimmy Johnson (bass). Has anyone else noticed that, like the fusion of the '70s, fusion of the late '80s/'90s has acquired and established a specific feel and sound of its own? Wackerman has now been part of that developing aesthetic for some time, from his associations with Zappa all the way through his tenure with Allan Holdsworth. THE VIEW takes up right where FORTY REASONS left off and nicely treads the same smoothly concocted, prototypical fusion that has become the genre's contemporary trademark. This time around, Carl Verheyen assaults the strings alongside Holdsworth, while Jimmy Johnson applies sharp basslines below Jim Cox's keyboards like wet cement. Walt Fowler's there too, punctuating the vibrant atmosphere with crisp slabs of trumpet and flugelhorn. And, of course, Wackerman anchors the entire ensemble. Indeed, he has practically patented a unique drumming style, incorporating a multitude of absurd time changes and ballistic embellishments. A damn nice VIEW from up here, if we do say so ourselves.
