Victory at Sea - Complete Series (DVD, 2003, 4-Disc Set; Digitally Restored)

The video's image quality was to be expected, most of it is from film taken over sixty years ago but still very informative.

The biggest drawback was they edited the sound from mono to stereo there by making the narration almost inaudible....the background music is just TOO loud to make this series enjoyable....too bad!

The music score is loud enough to drown out the voice, when the naration is loud enough to hear the music is intolerable.

This set of 4 DVD's is excellent. When you consider it was made in the early 1950's it's unbelieveable. The Video quality is perfect. There is a problem with one chapter where the sound level varies. This can be annoying. It's only for a short time. I learned things about WWII and the parties involved that surprised me. I actually bought this for my older brother for the music value. After watching it he will need to buy his own. This is a must have for every alpha male!!

This is the ultimate dvd collection for people interested in the history of the U.S. Navy in WW2. The footage and narration both offer an invaluable insight into the realities of life at sea, the horrors of war, and just how tough the fight for freedom really is. After watching these videos you will feel like you were there. A must for any Maritime or Naval history buff. Please remember our sailors on memorial day.

Excellent quality collection of a historically important documentary series. As might be expected for a series produced in 1952, it is relentlessly positive about the allies and negative about the axis powers; particulary the segments on submarine warfare. However, it is surprisingly graphic in its depiction of the brutatlity of war, and the high price paid by all those involved. The footage of the campaigns is real, and the narration and composition are very good.

My collection of Victory At Sea arrived today and I didn't expect such quick service. The DVD set was carefully wrapped and arrived in excellant shape. I will definitely do business with this vender again. I did not haggle on the price because the suggested price is better than anywhere else; stores, on-line through The History Channel, etc. The sound quality is just as good as when I used to view them on TV and I'm more than satisfied.

I love the fact that these are the very same episodes I watched as a boy with my brother and Dad every Sunday evening. The miles of footage garnered from all sides of the war-fence are truly amazing for those who haven't seen this wonderful accounting of WWII!
* Before biding, I read about 5 reviews. 3 of the 5 stated that the audio was drowned out by the newly mastered Dolby stereo, whereas this program was originally broadcast in mono. I decided that 3 out of 5 was a bad deal all right, but I bought the 4 DVD set anyway as a birthday gift for my brother. It arrived with a dent at the bottom, which worried me, so I opened the package and popped in a disk. I adjusted my audio amp to mono/simulated stereo, and that solved the problem of the oration being truly drowned out by the lousy musical mix on the mastering. In 5.1 Dolby--you don't want to listen to this wonderful program!!! The editor who did the newly mastered version must've been asleep at the wheel, as the mix is such a let down--but if you set your amp to MONO, you will enjoy!
