A Very Long Engagement (DVD, 2005)

"A Very Long Engagement" stars Audrey Tautou, one of my favorite actresses. In the film she portrays a young French woman who has been crippled by both a case of Polio at a young age and also by the disappearance of her fiance, Manech, who left to fight in the war and never returned home. In her quest to find him, she encounters many different characters, some of whom are absolutely hilarious and some of whose stories are truly heart-wrenching. Trust me, you'll love it!

There is nothing I dislike about it. I bought it mainly because of Audrey Tautou, and because I loved all about the movie, including the visual effects, the cast, the scenarios, the theme, the direction. And because I wanted the extras, which are not available where I live.

I was very impressed with "A Very Long Engagement" and thought it an excellent movie for its war scenes, mystery, visual quality, and acting. I also liked that it had light moments and wasn't this constant depressing drama. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes war movies, mystery, or period dramas.

this movie is really good. if you've seen amelie or another movie directed by jean-pierre jeunet i highly recommend this movie.

This is a great, feel good story. It is about love and hope in the worst of times. Audio options are limited (only in french), but do not be turned off by that. This can also maje a great gift to someone who is studying french, or is french. Great actors, great movie!

Very intense piece about a love that transends time and the dispair of war. The character development and cinemetography are lush. The sub plots are amazing with supporting actresses Marion Collard (Academy Award winner for La Vie en Rose) plus Jodie Foster (speaking flawless French!) only add to the depth of this production. The subtitles do not detract from the movie. Every time I watch AVLE, I get more out of it. It is the gold standard. "Atonement" tries to emulate it and falls way short.

This is a great, great movie, I watched this movie on a plane trip to Paris and I watched it 3 times it was good. From beginning to end the story flows and keeps you involved in the film. You will not be disappointed watching this movie

This movie which represents fine film making at it's ultimum best. Great love story which is set against a back drop of first world war in France is brought to life with wonderful acting on all levals, great direction, great costume which are historically accurate, wonderful photography and musical soundtrack. Truly a feast for the senses. One does not mind the subtitles because you soon realise to extract anything from the original would be a crime.Destined to hold a top spot in the best of the best of all time great films, truly a masterpiece in every sense of the word.The story which is sometimes tragic in nature has an unspoken word of faith in all things which weaves constantly through the narrative,and ultimately leaves the viewer beliieving in the power of fate and destiny. Highly recommended.

Excellent story, beautiful picture, excellent actors and director. Everyone should watch this movie. A real lesson of history. Definitely a movie to own.

This film is excellent! While never having experienced Trench Warfare, the battle scenes, for me, were vivid recreations of passages found in Robert Graves novel, 'Good-Bye To All That'. The novel has earned the reputation of the best book of it's kind in describing actual conditions in France during WWI. This attention to historical detail, coupled with a beautiful love story, makes this film truly worth seeing.

I absolutely loved this movie! it had me so engaged throughout! and it came in the exact condition that was promised.

Fabulous film! The story is excellent; I love those plots that are twisted yet enticing and take the whole film to truly comprehend their intricacies. After renting it (and watching it three times that night), I bought it right away!

Acting is first rate, story is superior, more war action perhaps as Band of Brothers, and they spent a fortune on sets and detail. Highly recommend this movie.. also, good part played by the fluently bilingual Jodie Foster.

it was alright. Not enough gaspard ulliel in it though :(

other than that, the movie was pretty good, typical war like violence, excellent part for jodie foster.. enjoyed mathilde's flash backs about manech and how they met.
