Album Notes Recorded live at The Bitter End, New York. Includes liner notes by Allan Sherman. All material written by Bill Cosby. Bill Cosby's 1963 debut, on Warner Brothers, was a hit, but in retrospect his best material was yet to come, on subsequent recordings for the same label. He hadn't yet developed his cast of characters, his storytelling style or his capacity for stretching out like the jazzmen he admired and really letting a piece develop. Nevertheless, what people responded to was his good-natured conversational approach and goofy, surreal way of looking at his fellow humans--and there's plenty of that here. The centerpiece of this set is the "Noah" trilogy, three short conversations between Noah and "The Lord" (or, in the middle piece, a neighbor who can't get his car out of the driveway because Noah's under-construction ark is in the way). Cosby has already known how to make you forget you're hearing just one guy with a mike, as he brings out Noah's rising sarcasm over God's instructions ("Right...What's an ark?"). Cosby's revisionist imagination charms--in another piece ("The Coin Toss") he envisions a pair of great military conflicts in history as sporting events. RIGHT is a chance to hear Cosby at work just a few years before making records like WONDERFULNESS and TO RUSSELL, MY BROTHER.
