THE VERY BEST OF JACKIE WILSON is a just-about-definitive greatest hits collection, including the pick of the singer's New York and Chicago periods. Interestingly, it's the earlier stuff that's more musically schizophrenic, veering oddly between sweaty R&B and pop schmaltz.
Some of Wilson's best proto- rock and soul hits, such as "Reet Petite," "Lonely Teardrops," and "That's Why I Love You So," are included here. Though the star himself had an odd proclivity for such white-bread fare as "Night" (a pop rendition of an aria from the Saint-Saens opera SAMSON AND DELILAH), the later "Higher and Higher" era songs, are much more consistently soulful. Throughout the collection (the last song dates from 1970), Wilson's vocals are reliably stratospheric.
