Album Notes Liner Note Author: Chuck Girard. The Castells sat next to the Cascades in the record bins, but the similarity doesn't end there -- both were white vocal groups that proffered the most enchantingly airy of teen pop, like all-male versions of The Fleetwoods. While The Cascades were soft and gentle to the point of being twee, The Castells offered a more varied approach, from the '50s vocal group stylings heard on their rendition of "Some Enchanted Evening" to the Beach Boys-inspired "I Do," which Brian Wilson produced. The high harmonies of 1961's near-hit "Little Sad Eyes" suggests that The Castells and The Lettermen were moving in similar directions. Best of The Castells is an 18-track anthology that compiles the group's four charting singles and the entirety of their rare 1962 album So This is Love. The group's two biggest hits, "Sacred" and "So This is Love," are highlights, but there are excellent obscurities to be found, such as "I Get Dreamy," on which a female session vocalist adds a bit of spice to the group's deliciously vanilla harmonies. The anthology has most, but not all, of the group's Era recordings from 1961-63, the majority of which are stylistically similar to the hits. A couple of exceptions are the novelty "Stiki De Boom Boom" and "Clown Prince," the latter of which is a dramatic tune with Spanish horns that vaguely resembles the theme from Disney's Zorro. A few recordings were mastered from vinyl with noticeable surface noise. Collectables' anthology, The Very Best of The Castells is a straight reissue of this collection. ~ Greg Adams A vocal pop group along the lines of the Fleetwoods, the lesser-known Castells have their career highlights collected on Collectables' The Very Best of the Castells. Essentially a reissue of the K-Tel collection The Best of the Castells, this album includes most of the group's 1962 album So This Is Love, as well as several of their singles. "So This Is Love," "I Get Dreamy," "Echoes in the Night," and "On the Street of Tears" are among the high points of this collection, which offers the most complete look at the Castells available. ~ Heather Phares
