Versions of History from Antiquity to the Enlightenment
This is an excellent compilation of historical writings from which you can discern patterns. There is more breadth than depth.
Frequently used in history classes this is a book not intended for one to learn more about history or historians, but more to give you a broad sense of what kind of material historians wrote.
Kelley avoids going into great detail about historians and focuses on their writings instead. He provides only about a paragraph on each of the subject historians, but he shares very intersting samples of that historian.
The book can be used as a fast reference and research tool to locate an historian that might warrant further invesitgation and reading. Strictly speaking it is a great survey tool.
