One of the GREATEST electronic CD's ever...

Of the electronic/dance/techno music that has passed by my ears over the last decade or so, names like Underworld, Oakenfold, The Postal Service, Orbital, Portishead, and Covenant still hold spots of love and honour in my collection. With the explosion of synthesized music these days, it seems nigh impossible to name a favourite band or favourite record amidst the electro, techno, trance, synthpop, trip-hop, and house that floods culture.
And yet I've always managed to come back to a single record that stuck out from the rest: The Crystal Method's "Vegas", otherwise known (at least to me) as "the best driving music ever created". Perhaps this disc was released at the perfect time in my life, in the middle of my high school career in 1997 when I was desperatly seeking an alternative to the grunge and metal that had comprised my earlier years.
I purchased Vegas when it was released on the BMG mail-order catalogue, and spun it so many times in my Discman that the painted blue top began to flake off. From the moment "Trip Like I Do" opened with that almost-cheesy Dark Crystal sample, I was hooked, and immediatly unplugged my CD player and rushed out of my parent's house to my old highschool Toyota. Over 10 years later, Vegas still resides at the top of my car's iPod playlist, surpassing and outliving other 90's acts like Prodigy and Moby, legions of Glogal Underground compilations, and a host of EBM, synthpop, and industrial.
While Crystal Method has released other excellent songs, their debut album flows the best, and contains the most timeless of their music. The album itself is quite dynamic, especially for techno, and comprises driving, high-energy tunes like "Busy Child" with dark and sparse tracks such as "High Roller". I can't name my absolutely favourite track, but I will say that I tend to shift at higher RPM's whenever I hear "Keep Hope Alive".
All in all, Crystal Method filled a void in my nascent electronic music collection, flanked by Orbital on one side and KMFDM on the other. My interest in the sounds produced for Vegas piqued my interest in synthesizers that remains today.
