Album Notes
Skip James's 1930s recordings were among the finest in all of Delta blues, but VANGUARD SESSIONS: BLUES FROM THE DELTA contains performances from the second phase of James's career, when he was "rediscovered" by folk revivalists in the '60s, along with so many of his peers. Nevertheless, this era of his work holds a magic all its own. If anything, his haunting vocal style sounds even spookier, moving even more often into an otherworldly falsetto, and he brings a whole new feeling to songs he'd recorded decades earlier, like "I'm So Glad" and "Devil Got My Woman." Even though the aged bluesman's technical facility may not have been what it once was, he more than made up for it in raw, visceral feeling, and this is an excellent sampling of his latter-day work.
