3rd ed is better than 2nd ed or requiem (the red cover)

3rd Ed. Vampire the Masquerade is well put together, and has many of the charts that were lacking in second ed. some people fault VtM for being closed ended, since they recently(ish) published their "end of the 'world of darkness'" series - primarily "gehenna" and "apocalypse". it is the belief of this reviewer that while the background for the end of the world has been laid, that there's no reason for it to happen now, just because the writers say so. i am also against the new system: "vampire the requiem" - the one with the red cover, because it seems quite washed out and watered down in comparison to VtM.
without just ranting about the new White Wolf products, i highly recommend Vampire the Masquerade, as it is a well conceived, open ended role playing system. it is equally effective for combat as it is for diplomatic encounters. the clans are well described, and have very specific advantages and disadvantages, but are not so specifically defined that the player is unable to tailor the character to fit his or her needs or playing style. while it is really quite doable to build a character who is incredibly overpowered, but it is for the GM to moderate, and choose whether or not to allow players to create completely overpowered characters. Vampire the Masquerade (3rd Edition - 1998) has been one of my favorite role playing games for nine years, and i highly recommend it as its own stand alone game, or as a break from another game. two very enthusiastic thumbs up!

  Wonderful Gaming Product
Review created: 03/11/08

If you are interested in a White Wolf Vampire campaign, this is where to start. It has information about all of the clans, not just the Camarilla. It is also probably the most detailed in length and gives you the most to work with. Highly Recommended.

  It is a World...Of Darkness...
Review created: 01/02/08

This book is the core rulebook of one of the greatest Role Playing Games ever made. "Vampire: The Masquerade" is a game based in the World of Darkness, a setting created by White Wolf, and is a storytelling game where players assume the roles of the Undead, belonging to one of thirteen clans who, despite allegiances made, are locked in a struggle for dominance, while the end of the world looms like a shadow just outside of their vision. Well researched, superbly written, thoughtful, insightful, and above all, fun, I highly recommend this book for any Vampire afficionado, aspiring horror writer, improv actor, bored D&D player, gamer, or...just about anyone looking for entertainment. With the layers and layers of backstory and hand-crafted background information, this book is sure to bring years (that's right, years) of entertainment to almost anyone who picks it up and decides to play. Unfortunately, since they've gone out of print they are extremely hard to find; but if you can find a copy, my suggestion would be to grab it as fast as you can. It is definitely worth the money.
