Valkyrie profile lenneth is one of the most original RPGs you will ever play. Its originality comes from its unique gameplay and the way the game progress. From the start, you are told you have 120 periods of time before the big battle Ragnarok which will determine the fate of the world. You play as Lenneth Valkyrie, a warrior maiden sent by Odin with the task of recruiting the souls of fallen warriors from Midgard so they may help Odin in the final battle.
The game is broken into 8 chapters, and each chapter made of 24 periods. Each time you enter a town, dungeon or any other location you use one (or more) periods. So you have to use them wisely. During a chapter, your main goal is to recruit characters and train them so you can send them to Odin. Recruiting characters can be a little confusing, since the game doesn't tell you where to go next. After you get a character, you will have to train him, or in other words level him up. The only way to do that is by fighting enemies in dungeons. Dungeons (and towns) are all in 2D, and based on plat forming. I found them rather short and easy, just jump from platform to another, you can shoot ice crystals and use them as steps to reach high places, or freeze enemies.
The battle system is what makes this game unique and different from other RPGs. You can bring up to four characters to battles, each character is assigned to a button. When you press a button, the corresponding character attack. You can perform different combinations, depending on the pattern you make. Stringing attacks together produces high combos allowing you to use special attacks, these special attacks do massive damage to your foes. You can also cast spells, change equipments, and use items during your turn.
Speaking of items, you don't buy them form shops. You make items from materialize points. You can make items like Potions, accessories, and weapons. You get MP after battles, and you can convert items you don't want into MP.
The experience points you get from battles can be used for different things. You can teach new skills for you characters, or level up an already learnt ones. You can also improve their traits (characteristics like Brave, selfish, etc) this is very important, cause if you send a coward, selfish warrior to the final battle he will only get in the way and probably die quickly.
This game is non linear. You have the choice to keep your characters (I know its very annoying to send a character after spending hours training him!), but that will weaken Odin and make him lose the battle against evil. Doing that will get you the worst ending!
Yes there are three different endings, the best ending can only be attained on hard mode. Playing on high difficulty is very rewarding, there are more dungeons, new weapons and even more characters! After you beat the game you unlock a bonus dungeon called the seraphic gate.
If you have played the original VP you might be a little disappointed, as there are no new things added to the game except for the awesome new cut scenes. But its still one of a kind experience and you should definitely play it!
Graphics: VPL is very beautiful and attractive game. The new cut scenes are awesome. 10/10
Gameplay: Innovative and deep with lots of customization. 10/10
Replay value: Three different endings, bonus dungeon, secret characters and a very non linear gameplay make the game very replayable
Overall: 10 (Recommended!)
