The only truly great RPG on the PSP

True, the PSP has a real dearth of RPGs. And this remake adds barely any content to the original, save a few (admittedly gorgeous) FMV movies.

But then, they didn't really need to change anything. This was a fantastic game back on the Playstation, and time hasn't dulled it at all. The unique game structure and fantastic premise - you are a Valkyrie, collecting the souls of the dead to fight in the final battle of Ragnarok - capture the player from the very start. There's not really been another game like it, save the new prequel just released for PS2. This originality is particularly welcome on the PSP, since all the other RPGs are very traditional in their storylines and approach (random encounters, defeat big bad foozle).

The platform elements are another original touch. When you enter a dungeon, town, or adventuring area, the perspective shifts to a 2D platform style. It reminds me slightly of Castlevania; you need to solve problems to reach new areas. Not only that, you are able to avoid enemies if your timing is right, or if you are able to stun them before they attack. I love this, since I can't stand random encounters!

I don't want to spoil the storyline, so I won't say much; however, the game is very well written, and you will definitely want to play through to the ending. Or endings, I should say; the game can end in a variety of ways, depending on what events you witness, how many warrior souls you are able to collect, and even on the difficulty level you choose.

I really can't recommend this game enough, so I'll finish here - but anyone with a PSP and even a passing interest in RPGs should not pass this up. And don't judge by the retro graphics - it's the gameplay and story that make this fantastic.
