It's not really surprising that The Go-Go's would eventually end up getting the BEHIND THE MUSIC treatment. Breaking past the template already established by society and the music industry, these fresh-faced gals wrote and played their own music while hiding various forms of sexually and hygenically dysfunctional behavior behind a mask of cheery pop and apple-pie smiles. Fronted by all-American cheerleader type Belinda Carlisle, the band's true creative firepower came from guitarists Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey, from whose pens issued a number of infectious pop-punk singles including "Vacation" and "We Got the Beat." (Wiedlin co-wrote "Our Lips Are Sealed" with Fun Boy Three's Terry Hall). Bassist Kathy Valentine and drummer Gina Schock provide a solid bottom end throughout this collection, especially on lesser-known nuggets like the reverb-drenched "Skidmarks on My Heart" and surf-driven "Beatnik Beach." Although the band imploded after three albums, their infectious use of hooks and harmonies remained consistent even towards the end when numbers like "Turn to You" and "Head Over Heels" became their last Top 40 appearances. For a more thorough overview of these pop pioneers, aficionados are directed to the 2-CD collection "RETURN TO THE VALLEY OF THE GO-GO's."
