V For Vendetta - not your typical action flick!

I had a preconceived idea that V For Vendetta was the typical comic book movie, full of action and with the basic plot of good vs. evil. With good winning the battle in the end (of course).
What I actually saw was much more than I expected. It is a very well written story with many unexpected plot twists. V is not your typical hero and this movie is much more than an action flick. If you want wall to wall action this may not be for you, although V does some serious butt kicking in the movie. If you prefer something more thought provoking you should definitely check it out. I rented it the first time, but I went the next week and bought my own copy. Highly recommended.

  V For Very Enjoyable

If you missed seeing this one in the theaters, it's definitely worth the cost to own it. I thought it might be another lame comic book adaptation, but it exceeded my expectations, and made me wish I was a strangely disfigured superhero. I purchased this movie not knowing what to expect, aside from the sidecomments my friends had given me. Forget wondering whether or not it's worth your money. It is. The special effects and fight sequences are enough to make you too want to be a disfigured superhero too!

V for Vendetta is a very cerebral movie with a lot of deep ideas. So much so, that my wife instantly fell asleep. If you are like me and enjoy movies with complex political plot lines and unexpected twist then you will like V for Vendetta. The movie's protagonist, "V" challenges the futuristic government of England in an attempt to change it. "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter," eloquently sums up the plot line of this movie. It runs parallel to many of the things going on in today's news. So much so, that this futuristic government is kept alive by fear. Civil liberties are limited and controlled and V hopes to change it to create a better world for all of us. Great movie, but your wife may not like it.

Not Very Original~Count of Monte Cristo Redressed
Review created: 08/14/06(updated 10/06/06)

V for Vendetta is brought to you by the Wachowski brothers (creators of the Matrix trilogy). In this flick they bring to life the DC comic character V whose mission is to free a post apocalyptic United Kingdom from a religious, self-righteous, fascist government. The message of this story is that human ideals and freedoms will overcome the lies and misdeeds of an oppresive government. The movie stars Hugo Weaving, as V, and Natalie Portman as EV.

This is a dramatic movie that relies mainly on the acting abilities of its two main characters. This is not a high-tech special effect thriller. The world that Evie and V inhabit is a London similar in technology, atmoshpere and development to the current day. It's refreshing to see a comic book brought to the screen that relies on the skills of the actors instead of the magic of cg. Hugo Weaving does an admirable job of bringing V to life.

Not to give anything away, but somewhere during the middle of the movie I was quite disappointed in EV. However, by the end she eventually redeems herself and becomes the reluctant heroin of this action adventure. All-in-all V for Vendetta is a movie with a theme that has been brought to the screen numerous times. It's basically the Count of Monte Cristo brought to you in a futuristic world. This isn't a great movie, but it's worth watching.

This is my favorite movie of the past two years, and I watch a lot of movies! It offers a glimpse of what our future might be if we continue to allow our freedoms to be taken away by fascist leaders.

  Surprisingly good movie

This movie is a cross between George Orwell's 1984 and the Matrix. It features an England of the future whose repressive government constantly monitors its populace for signs of rebellion, or subversion. Those that deviate from the norm are removed and either tortured or killed. Fighting this oppression is the masked V who is perhaps the most intelligent yet deadly crime fighter / rebel ever seen. V can spout poetry one moment and throw knives with deadly accuracy the next.

V for Vendetta was originally a DC comic and the movie stays true to that origin. The Wachowski Brothers, who released the Matrix movies, do an impressive job of translating this comic to film. The special effects are excellent as is the mood and atmosphere they create for the film. The story moves along crisply with no real slow points and the acting is solid. Natalie Portman is quite good as is Stephen Rea and John Hurt in a supporting role. The story line is also quite good and keeps you guessing through most of the movie.

V for Vendetta is visually appealing, has excellent fight sequences, good acting, and a great story line. Basically this movie has something for everyone so get it today and enjoy.

A Film Which Predicts a Scary Future...
Review created: 08/15/06
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I think that everyone should watch this just on the basis that they can appreciate the form of government we have. Furthermore, I think people need to witness and alternative future in with totalitarianism reigns supreme. At the same time, this film opens our eyes to the world we currently live in. It really makes you question just what our own government could be up to, concealing, plotting, etc. Although this movie has a strong political theme to it, you don't have to be a fan of works such as "1984" to appreciate it. It tells a riveting story of a corrupt and almighty government who falls thanks to the efforts of a hero they created. I rather enjoyed how we never got to see what V looked like prior to his masked persona and what he looked like under the mask - it really kept his character very mysterious as he was through out the entire film. I think this film was a good mix of plot, action and drama - it really came together to present a solid story. While the story isn't original, it never ceases to entertain when such a story is retold. I haven't read the graphic novels this film is based on, so I cannot provide a comparison for those of you wondering. However, I went to see this film on the basis that it was a graphic novel first and I wasn't disappointed - so perhaps neither will you. The character V is a rather unique character. He respects the days of old, the freedom the country and its people once had - so much to the point that he wears the mask of a man who died believing in freedom. I only had a couple problems with this film, but they really don't seem to suck the fun out of it overall. The first problem is that for a movie based on a hero...with rather remarkable strength and fighting skills, there could have been a bit more action. There are several scenes and they are well executed, but the commercials made it seem like a heavy action flick. The other dispute I had was the amount of time and focus this film put on the developing relationship between the two main characters. It seemed like a decent part of this film focused on the characters played by Weaving and Portman - it bothers me, but on retrospect, it actually appears to be crucial to telling the tale. If you're looking for non-stop action in this movie, you may be disappointed. If you're looking for a intense story with heavy meaning, you'll be completely satisfied. Fans of The Matrix can truly appreciate this film. I still stand firm that everyone should watch this movie just once to open their eyes to new ideas.

I loved the movie. There has been a lot said by previous reviewers, so I'll be brief. I think the spirit of the movie was summed up in the last scene where the woman is asked "Who was he?" and she replies "He is all of us." That was great.

  V For Vendetta
Review created: 08/13/06

An action movie for the intellectual crowd. A major comeback for the Wachowski brothers after the
meandering buffoonery of The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Hugo Weaving gives
a stunning performance that's all the more impressive since you never see his face. Natalie Portman
plays a girl on the run from a oppresive governement in London England sometime in the near future.
What makes the film so good is the way it is able to weave above average action fare with great humor
and a forboding sense of dread. Revenge was never so entertaining, or smart.

  V for Vendetta
Review created: 07/12/06
4 of 14 people found this review helpful.

V for Vendetta" is going to confuse a lot of people. Nevertheless, and make no mistake about it, this is movie making of the highest order, combining all the finest elements of great storytelling into a potent roller coaster of a movie filled with great action, intellect and above all, ideas. Its message can - and will - easily be dismissed by naysayers as sophomoric or too "out there," or "anti-american" but there is also an earnestness here that will resonate strongly, and perhaps, frighteningly, to many viewers who will not fail to see the correlation between this fictional tale and the way the world we live in works.

Filled with stereotypes and archetypes, "V" is unapologetic in its essaying of morality and in its strongly held sentiment that this tale is "for the people, by the people." Brothers and writers Larry and Andy Wachowski (of Matrix fame) have infused their screenplay with the anger, confusion and hope captured in Alan Moore's original graphic novel - and it's better looking as a result.

I truly believe that many who see "V" will be upset by it, but hopefully more of us will be inspired by its bold, blatant message and take a good hard look at ourselves and the way the world works around us and see that, with sacrifice and thoughtfulness, the world can be changed.

As Evey, Natalie Portman is cast in something of the "victim" role, but she makes us route for her, and to her credit she goes beyond that making the transformation of her character not only believable, but in the end, noble.

Hugo Weaving - the man behind the mask - gives a performance that can only be described as mesmerizing. As "V" he exposes all of the strength and weakness of a character that is equal parts savior and villain.

The physical production is beautiful in its realism as it paints a nightmarish world of the not-very-distant future (2020) and is chilling in its depiction of governmental power, socio-political corruption and, ultimately, the complacency of its citizens. Weaving's "V" challenges, and ultimately changes all of that, as he quickly unravels the fabric of civilized society, capturing the public with his bold ideas - and with the promise and permanancy of change through rebellion and political uprising.

Most chillingly, the film invokes the dread once feared in "1984" but with a renewed vigor that drives home the horrors Orwell foresaw, and still loom large in our comfy modern world. Chilling? You betcha! For those who know the novel, there is little skimping, and, given the current world situation, one must absolutely applaud the filmmakers for "going there" as far as the ending is concerned. This is film making at its emotional and challenging best.

Are there flaws? Of course there are, but ultimately "V for Vendetta" rises far above them in its presentation of a world filled with ideas that have forever been debated, and does it in a story well told, beautifully acted and full of hope for humankind. Not bad work for a movie. Actually, it's magnificent.

Remember, Remember When Natalie Portman Had Hair
Review created: 07/07/06

Well, here's the deal: If you like the Wachowski Brothers (the dudes that made The Matrix + sequels), you enjoy Dystopian literature (like "1984" or "Erewhon" or maybe "Fahrenheit 451"), or just like fun movies with a lot of thumbing noses at "The Man," then you will probably dig V For Vendetta.

I went to the theater twice for this one. It's not that it was all that original (far from!), or that the issues were anything new, I think I just enjoyed the fact that the movie didn't have to take itself overly serious to get its point across. Yes, there are some moral issues involved, but at its heart, V For Vendetta is a lively, irreverent action film that gently tweaks the nose of society rather than beating it over the head with a documentary-style political agenda.

And we all want to have fun in the theater, right?

Again, I highly reommend this movie. It's fun, it has wonderful actors and actresses (I especially loved Hugo Weaving as the faceless V), and it doesn't get preachy or pretentious like most films these days.

In fact, the only thing that could have made this movie any better was if Natalie Portman had shown more skin (besides the top of her head). =)

Go buy a copy (but don't bid on the one I'm bidding on, darn you!) today. you won't regret it.

A very enjoyable and thought provoking movie! The viewer needs to pay attention to the copious dialogue - But this film has action, drama and makes several bold points - encompassing many societal/political/governmental/philosophical/religious viewpoints and connotations! It makes us rethink the definitions of a Hero and a Terrorist and the contrasting and yet similar experiences, attributes, convictions and methods of both! Very entertaining movie!

V for Vendetta is an action packed thriller derived from the combined minds of the Wachowski Brothers, the creators of the Matrix trilogy. Starring Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving, it is an entertaining film, with a very rich storyline. As all of the movies the Wachowski Bros. do, it is deep with meaning and chock full of riddles and puzzles. A great movie for someone who likes insightful cinema, or a great action movie. Natalie Portman does a great job as "Eve" and Hugo Weaving would have never been guessed as the masked "V". A movie to add to your collection, or a rental for a weekend.. this movie is enjoyable.

Loved the spewing of vocabulary words from "V", which begin with the letter, "v."
I found it romantic to "V" portrayed an elusive character behind the mask. Mysterious, yet romantically attractive.

The common abuse of political powers to choking society: pharmaceutical and medical powers gone awry.

A must see for those who love complex futuristic films.
Review created: 07/18/09
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Making a splash on the scene in 2006, V for Vendetta may not cater to any one set of movie-goers, but seems to fit into niche of its own. Just as George Orwell's novel "1984" attempted to paint a portrait of our own future, this film seems to have done so with believability and impact. The Wachowski Brothers wrote the screenplay and can greatly be recognized with the high brow sci-fi "Matrix Trilogy" which gave them the credibility to do just about anything they want in film.

The story-line, although complex at times, seems to always come together and present the future through the eyes a madman and his semi-captor cohert Evey (Natalie Portman), a working class young lady, that has as many high ideals as most, but tries to comprehend V (Hugo Weaving), who hides his identity behind the mask of a madman. Little do we know that V was seeking vengeance upon the leaders of the now nation lead by the Grand Prime Minister of Britian played by John Hurt. The tension that develops as our bold and charismatic freedom fighter V schemes and plot to get payback from the people that scarred him for life.

This film has many different fight scenes with confusing and unexpected cat and mouse play between V and the so-called establishment that wish to snuff him out.
The mailing of the masks to various places even makes it harder to stop him since everyone wants to mimic his progress. The exactness and timing of certain events in this film make it a real knuckle chewer.

Natalie Portman delivers an astounding range of emotional power in this film and helps the film along by revealing a side to Evey that we don't see at the beginning.

I give this a 5/5 for action, intrigue, cleverness, and forcing us to find no middle ground between the opposing views that this film screams for us to do.

IF YOU LIKE MY REVIEW PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO LET ME KNOW BY VOTING. THANKS!

This MOVIE caught me way off guard. I rented it because I had a free movie rental at my local store and debated on even popping it in. The previews did not do this movie justice. It is set in Britain a few years from now where a dictator type leader has risen to power after the US has broken into Civil War over the War in the Middle East. The protagonist in this movie in a wonderful character called V (the masked man from the previews) who befriends a young girl played by Portman. This movie is action packed but tackles issues such as acceptance of others beliefs. Its a powerful movie that is very deep on many different levels. This movie would make a great discussion in a college or maybe even a high school class.
