Some thoughts on the TRU9485-2 home phone system

The Uniden TRU 9485-2 cordless phone.
Having received my device as a refurb product, I first off, had no blister packaging to tear into with a utility knife. Cut the fancy packaging and sell it to me in a brown cardboard box!
Refurbs had no scratches or dents either. Looked and performed good as new!
Uniden website has the entire owner's manual in Adobe format. Print only what you need and save a tree!
Functionality of the TRU 5.8 Ghz models is a step-up from the 900Mhz Uniden phones I owned previously, with cool remote message management features away from home and from the cordless handset, and the much-needed do-not-disturb button that families with quiet time deserve everywhere! So your eldest daughter has friends that like to ring her up at 3am. No sweat! Hit the DND button and have her return the call in the morning. Speaker phone feature, both at the base and hand set, for those of use who still like challenging our friends into guessing whether or not they're being "conferenced" in, or not.
As for the 5.8Ghz frequency range. I have not tried to walk down the neighborhood to test radio ranging. Minimal interference and greater security was promised to us in the 1990's with the 900Mhz models, which truly
was an improvement over the 49Mhz (and less secure) models of the late 1980's. That is, someone with a police scanner or other cordless phone could easily eavesdrop on your conversations. This is much less so with the TRU series, at least I believe!
As for which radio frequency band cooks meat the best? I don't know that answer, but hope that 5.8Ghz doesn't leave us with brain tumors under our ear lobes in twenty years, long after the devices have outlived their useful life cycle.
And the signature orange LED glow on the LCD backlighting that Uniden has branded in this series of phones make for a trademarking hit.
In addition, bravo for not selling me a device with Ni-Cad batteries, rather this deal came with Nickel Metal Hydride batteries in the cordless handsets, providing greater battery recharge cycles and minimal "memory effect". I believe all Ni-Cad batteries new and old, should be removed from the
planet immediately!
As of 2009, it's a shame most of us will be dropping our land lines and totally relying on cellular services soon. Beyond EBay, devices in this class are starting to pop up at wholesale liquidators everywhere.
It is with hope that we'll still be able to use this fading generation of land-line devices with our Skype converter boxes and personal computers, at least until they start to feel like heavy, burdensome, antiques that our futuristic lifestyles increasingly move away from.
