Includes liner notes by Orrin F. Hollowjie. Compiled from private recordings--mostly, it seems, from audience tapes made on amateur equipment-this album bears a poor sound quality that can prove distracting. But the chance to hear Parker's genius in action compensates for the substandard recording quality. These dates (Chicago '48 and New York '47-'48) pair Bird with those other progenitors of modern jazz--Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. And the songs, like the riotous swing of the Latin jazz "Manteca" and the beautiful ballad "Lover Man," do indeed display exhilarating energy and musicianship of the highest order. Therefore, even though elements such as timbre, tone and nuance get lost in the translation, THE UNHEARD CHARLIE PARKER does give us a rare chance to hear Bird, Diz and Miles doing what they do best: making pure, spontaneous, cutting-edge music.
