Album Notes The accompanying soundtrack to this vampire-meets-werewolf thriller is a cut above the usual slash-and-burn musical approach to the dark, gothic subject matter of movies such as UNDERWORLD. For a start it finds members of veteran rock bands such as Tool, Nine Inch Nails, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers joining forces (the project is produced by NIN's Danny Lohner) in an effective and often greater-than-the-sum-of-its-parts musical backdrop that would be fascinating enough without its cinematic raison d'etre. There are one-of-a-kind contributions from such luminaries as industrial rockers Skinny Puppy, Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano, California punk-metallists Finch, and David Bowie (himself no stranger to vampire movies with his appearance in THE HUNGER). Some compellingly beautiful, low-key pieces from Renholder and from Lisa Germano, whose "From a Shell" is a timely reminder of her haunting vocals and atmospheric songwriting, provide a tranquil counterpoint to the metal mayhem. UNDERWORLD is one of the most intelligently collaborative efforts of its ilk.
