The Underground Railroad Sampler by Eleanor Burns (2003, Paperback)

Eleanor Burns is a gifted teach. She has developed wonderful short cuts to cutting out and piecing quilts. She details them in this book with easy to follow instructions along with pictures for those of us that are visual learners. The story of how quilts played a vital role in the success of the underground railroad is also told.

This is a perfect companion to the Hidden in Plain View book. Very easy and detailed instructions for the beginner as well as "another way" for the more experienced quilter. Each pattern is identified as to it's importance in the pattern's use in the Underground Railroad. Highly recommend.

I bought this book for a quilting class. It's an excellent book
for learning techniques. I've learned a lot and I'm only on the
4th out of 16 blocks.

I love the history associated with the quilt. I'm looking forward to making it. Picture and directions are very clear and easy to follow.

Eleanor Burns breaks down quilting patterns so well and makes them achievable for everyone, especially those of us in a hurry. I especially love the research that has gone into the history of the blocks and the Underground Railroad. How sad that we ever needed such a process but the brave people who helped those in need are immortalized in these beautiful quilts.

This is a great book, because it has full directions, pictures, places for fabric samples for making historic quilts that celebrate African American quilting during the slavery era. The book is clearly written and the pictures are large enough to see the details of what the reader is being instructed to to do. I decided to buy the book on ebay, because it was offered at a great price and I needed it right away for a quilting class project. It rates high amongst the quilting books that I've purchased on ebay and elsewhere. It is a great project book for beginners as well as more advanced quilters.

I like her books and have a large collection of them. I use them in making Quilts, which is a hobby of mine. I will probably bid on other book by her, and some of the other quilt books. This is a great way to accare book and not have a lot of money invested in them.

This book is more than a quilt guide, it contains the history and some orginal photos of the slave movement towards the north....It is wonderful to be able to choose between a 12" or 6" block and both are illustrated very well. The book also tells which blocks are "easy" and " difficult" to sew. There is an abundance of color photos of finished quilts, plus a label to copy for your own quilt....Always a pleasure to have Eleanor Burns added to my collection.
