Being one of my favorite movies, I watched it on channel 36/ Family and I really enjoyed it. My mother and I watched it and she liked it too, her not really liking these kind of movies often. The movie gave me that warm feeling inside, for Diane Lane portrayed her role as Frances Mayes, a woman that wants romance after a divorce. The cover of the movie tells all, Frances standing by a window that overlooks some of Tuscany, a village in Italy. The movie is pretty simular to the book, but I liked the book more than the movie, most of the time I like the books that the movies is based on more than the movie.

Frances Mayes is a writer that lives in San Francisco. Living happily, she then gets a divorce. She is forced to move out and then moves into an apartment filled with depressed people who also had a divorce.

Then something good happens, her friend Patti (portrayed by Sadra Oh. I just love that name) becomes pregnant, she gives her ticket to Frances called "Gay and Away" in Tuscany.

Going to Tuscany, she decides to live there and she buys a huge villa, hiring a group of men to help her fix it up a bit. The villa, Franches finds out, is pretty special to some people. Like, everyday an old man brings a couple of flowers and puts them in a container of some sort in front of the house on a ledge.

Desperate for romance, she meets a guy named Marchello, on accident. Thinking they had an affair because she had sex with him, she finds out he has a girlfriend.

An adventure of romance takes off when a lot of things start to happen to Franches, involving a wedding, a new love, and much more. The story is genius and this movie is not to be missed. The acting was suberb as it shows that Diane can portray a happy character, but then go to a really sad character. The cover is my favorite part, even though it's just something to look at. The cover gives the watcher a mood of "I want to watch this" because it just looks so beautiful. The saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" does not go along with this movie, because the movie lives up to the cover. This is extremley recommended!

Hope you enjoy!

Fell in love with Tuscany, BEAUTIFUL film!

For many years every time I would pass this movie's box art I would almost pick it up. Then one day it made it's way to my dvd player at home... or via computer... doesn't matter.

Somehow this has become the movie I watch for a 'boost' or just to view something pleasant after a taxing day. The scenery is exquisite...that alone is worth the watch. As a 'reformed film crew person' I appreciate the production values placed in every project. This effort has it all. Entertaining dialogue, rich characters, unexpected plot turns and a cameo special effect that stays with you well after the movie ends... a pleasant, enjoyable film to be watched time & again. It would be thrilling to see these characters now 7-10 years later, the villa so central to the story and the young married couple... are they still together? Who else has shared the journey with the great Frederico muse, Katherine (exquisite performance by Lindsay Duncan).

Pawel Szajda who portrays the younger, Polish general construction laborer who finds true love at first site, is stunning in his first ever film performance. Much the same as Reese Witherspoons remarkable maiden performance in "Man in the Moon" with Sam Waterston and Tess Harper.

If you do not feel some lifting of spirit after seeing this film... check your pulse :-) You won't be disappointed.

  Lovely Movie
Review created: 05/15/09

Diane Lane proves she's the Rom-Com queen in this wonderful film. Based on the memoirs of Frances Mayes, this movie tells the tale of an American woman who buys a home in Italy, on a whim. It follows the ups and downs of her renovations, both on the home and within herself. Beautiful scenery and a feel-good storyline make for a great movie-watching experience. Enjoy!

If you like Diane Lane, you will love this movie. She glows as her usual sultry determined woman. Plenty of good Italian interest. An example of how a woman can begin again and succeed in a foreign country....very uplifting movie!

It is my favorite movie and it was sent promptly and without flaw. This movie is about a woman who goes through a divorce and goes on a romantic tour of Tuscany alone. She winds up buying an old villa there and fixes it up, finding love and happiness in the process. I have always seen myself doing something like that so I really related to Diane Lane's character in the movie. I love the part in which the friend says "Bad ideas...don't you just love those?". I am glad I made this purchase.

This movie has heart breaks and love, laughter and tears. I would recommend if you haven't seen it.Frances (Diane Lane) is a writer in her mid-'30s who feels emotionally derailed after her divorce. Her best friend Patti (Sandra Oh) decides she needs some time away from her problems Patti gives Frances a ticket for a two-week tour of the Tuscany region of Italy... Frances finds an old villa in small town of Cortona, Frances.Well she stay?...or is it too much for her and she returns back to her life in the US? Guess you will have to see to find out.One of my favorite movies to finally own,it is a movie you will want to share with others and one you will watch over and over..

A really good movie! A woman's movie! Neat story about a middle aged woman taking a huge chance after going through a devestating divorce. Moving, not to another town or another state, but to another country. Doing something that most people would find difficult in their younger years. Leaving everything and everyone you are familier with and starting over!! It's a movie about living life to it's fullest, taking chances and following dreams. Beautiful locations, building new relationships...Diane Ladd is a treasure!! Very Enjoyable

This movie has become comfort food for a lazy afternoon. It gives a real taste of Italian life. I enjoy watching a woman's dream of house and home come true. I live in a modern, cookie cutter American home. But I walk thru old neighborhoods ogling turn of the century houses. I go to estate sales just to get a look at the interior. I stop the car to admire three color trim. This woman reflects that love. And watching her build a new home and life after the first was so ruthlessly torn from her, is very rewarding.

I love this movie - highly recommend. Tuscany has got to be the most romantic city in the world. Watching this movie makes you want to run out, buy a ticket to Rome, then buy a villa and live there. If you love romance, you'll love this movie.
