This gets better with every listen. Buckingham is a musicians' musician and his fine craftmanship is evident on every cut. His guitar work has always been astounding ,kind of a rhythm guitar taken to a higher level, and the writing is strong. He is sometimes criticized for using too many studio effects on his vocals but so what, he's always sounded this way, and why should he be singled out. This CD reminds me that Buckingham was the most interesting part of Fleetwood Mac and that his solo efforts, despite limited commercial appeal, have proven his greatness. He plays 90% of the music on the CD himself and the lyrics are very personal in nature but the songs are very accessible pop acoustic gems. There's something for everyone on here, Mac fans, guitar lovers, a country-ish Rodeo song, even one that's sort of like Bjork (to my ears anyway),even a "Stones" cover. NO weak cuts! If this exact album were released by anyone unknown(and young)it would be a MONSTER hit. Why should Buckingham be treated as "old news" when he is still making music this good. Get this

  Its Magic
Review created: 03/04/08

This album is different from much of Lindsey Buckingham's work, though the important elements remain: the virtuoso guitar work, the studio experimentation, the raw emotion. What's different is the dreamlike atmosphere that Lindsey creates, focussing primarily on accoutic guitar (there are no "rockers" here), reverb-heavy vocals, and minimal percussion.

Some of these songs ("Down on Rodeo" and "Some's Gotta Change Your Mind") date back to the sessions that Buckingham had with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie around the time of "The Dance" that eventually became the sessions for Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Will" album. Some were written during the tour for that album, and some even more recently ("Shut Us Down" was on the Elizabethtown soundtrack). Yet they all hold together as a cohesive whole because of Buckingham's excellent songwriting, unique guitar and singing styles, and exceptional ability as a producer.

Of particular note are the opening song, "Not Too Late," with its fantastic guitar work and almost-shockingly personal lyrics, the title track, "Under the Skin," and "Down on Rodeo," which I think is arguably the best song on the album. As I write this, though, I feel I could mention any or all of the songs as particularly notable!

As with his previous solo album, "Out of the Cradle," and his songwriting contributions to "Say You Will," Buckingham is approaching the current phase of his career with incredible focus and long-honed skill. This album really is magic, and it's truly a worthy addition to the Buckingham catalog.

  Good Stuff

Pretty good stuff from a legend. Not my fav solo album by LB, but definitely a solid piece. His guitar work is fantastic, though his voice is getting a little thin. All in all, a worthy effort.

in my own opinion i was really disappointed with this cd. when i heard the song show you how, i thought for sure the entire cd would be one hit after another. i admire buckingham as a singer/songwriter/performer and have for a long time including pre fleetwood mac. buckingham is a genius but i guess if you are looking for some bgm (background music) this would be the perfect cd.
